sweet june

sunday morning. woke up to grey skies but I made h-chan and myself creamy hojicha latte with a new organic hojicha powder from hokkaido! we then pulled out the matcha strawberry roll cake that I picked up for him from yamazaki bakery from the fridge, put in three candles, and sang belated happy birthday to him ^__^. we then cut and ate the cake while listening to ichiko aoba’s windswept adan album on vinyl. a small plate of cake cream was set aside for our cat kahini as well, who enjoyed it very much.

although I had to weave through the heat and haze, tangible frustration of people sitting in their cars trying to cut through downtown los angeles traffic on a wednesday afternoon, I really enjoyed visiting the japanese bakery and waiting for the cake order to be prepared for pickup. guilt-free, I could watch what kinds of people came into the bakery, what their orders were (I tried to guess for some, and was surprised by the choice of others… such a serious looking person came in to order a slice of cheesecake for themselves?!)… the interactions made me smile on in the inside. bakeries always have such a sweet aroma and aura, it lifts my spirits just to hang around there. I also got myself a bismarck toast (my first time trying), which was toast with roasted tomato, egg, and cheese! it was delicious, I came out and ate it with a fork and knife and iced osmanthus/rose americano with much pleasure after surviving the heat and traffic.

hiro chan’s birthday cake box which I happily decorated! with a polaroid photo I took of him this morning as he left for work.
espresso over ice with rose water and osmanthus. my favorite summer drink to make recently.

we had a lovely series of birthday celebrations for my partner this past weekend. I took him to a beautiful sichuan restaurant with a dazzling ambiance and delicious food on the evening of his birthday. we also went hiking yesterday in the forest near our home and spent some time with our shoes off, sitting on river stones with feet dangling in the refreshing stream at the bottom of the canyon, sketching and painting our surroundings. after the hike we worked up a decent appetite and stopped by ikea for dinner on the way home. a memorable meal of vegan plant balls, mashed potatoes, lingoberry sauce with peas, veggie medallions, nordic salmon salad with mustard, and my favorites- sparking pear water and decaf coffee! the view in the ikea food court is beautiful, you can see the mountains in the distance. such a melting pot of the people of los angeles, and one of our favorite off kilter places to grab a bite on a saturday night.

lastly, I dyed my hair black, cut my own bangs, and took a onsen and lavendar scented bath soak last week, which has left me feeling refreshed. hope to continue this renewed feeling into next week, ciao!
