as long as

１、As long as he's here, I'll have more work to do.
　「彼がここにいる限り、私の仕事が増えるだろう」

２、I am happy as long as you are happy. 
　「あなたが幸せである限り(さえすれば)私は幸せです」

　 as long as ～　「～する限り」という意味で、接続詞です。副詞節になりますね。まずは、訳を覚えましょう。１つ目の例文はwhileを置き換えてもOK。during the whole time thatということです。時間の限度の意味になります。

　２つ目の例文はonly if(provided)と置き換えてもOKです。条件の意味になるのです。またas long asではなく、so long asになることもあります。

前置詞

３、I was kept waiting for as long as two hours. 
　　「私は２時間も待たされた」

　as long as ～　「～の間、～もの(長い間)」という意味で、前置詞になることもあります。longが強調されているのです。この場合、前に期間の意味で用いることを明示するためにforが置かれることがある。

識別

　ここで問題に問われるもう１つのポイントは、as far asとの識別です。as far asはas long asと同じく「～する限り」と和訳されるからです。ではas far asを見ていきましょう。

４、This is the best method as far as I know.
　　「私の知る限る範囲ではこれが最良の方法です」

５、Go along this road as far as the post office, and then turn left.　
    「この道路を郵便局のところまで行ってそれから左へ曲がりなさい」

　as far asは「程度、範囲の限度」のときに使われます。考え、記憶、知識、意見、視野などが具体例です。また、最初のasはsoに置き換えできます。as long asと違い、while、if onlyに置き換えができないことが識別のポイントです。

　５の例文は、「～まで」という意味で前置詞です。(＝to / until / till)。否定文の場合のみ最初のasをsoにできます。

慣用表現

ex. He isn't coming today, as far as I know.

as far as I know 「私の知る限りでは」

ex. As far as I can judge, they are all toblame.

as far as S can　「Sの出来る限り」

ex. The prairies stretch on all sides as far as the eye can see.

as far as the eye can see　「見渡す限り、目の届く限りでは」

ex. As far as I can remember, this is the third time we've met.

as far as I (can) remember　「私の覚えている限りでは」

ex. As far as I can see, you've done nothing wrong.

as far as I (can) see　「私のわかる限りでは」

ex. There is no objection, as far as we are concerned, in raising the prices.

as far as S is concerned 　「～に関する限り」

ex. You may stay here as long as you like.

as long as you like　「「好きなだけ」

Try to keep going for as long as possible .

as long as possible　「できるだけ」

こちらの慣用表現を覚えれば、識別は楽になります。
