単語はどのように取り組まれていますか？

今日はわたしが普段やっている単語学習方法の1つを

ご紹介したいと思います(^^)

＊look up words＊

I block out 15 to 20 minutes every day to look up words in an English dictionary.
（毎日15～20分は英語の辞書で単語を調べる時間を確保するようにしています）


As I listen to my favorite English show on Podcast, I look up words that I'm not familiar with or words that I know, but I don't feel comfortable using.
（ポッドキャストでお気に入りの英語の番組を聞きながら、馴染みがないものや、知っているけど、スムーズに使えないかなと感じるものを調べていきます）


What I like about this exercise is that I can not only deepen my understandings of those words but also expand my vocabulary around them at the same time.
（このエクササイズの好きなところは、それらの単語への理解が深まるだけでなく、それらに関連する語彙も同時に増やすことができることです）

＊ワンポイント解説＊

〇 block out .....：...... を確保する

〇 look up .....：...... を調べる

代名詞（it, them など）を使うときは、 look ..... up の語順にしないといけませんので注意してくださいね。

If you don't know what the word means, you should look it up in a dictionary.（その言葉の意味が分からないなら、辞書で調べたほうがいいよ）

また最近は、

"インターネットで調べる：look up ..... on the Internet / online"

を、検索ツールの "google" を動詞として使うこともかなりポピュラーになってます。

I'm not really sure if the restaurant is open today, so can you google it?
（今日そのレストランが開いてるかどうかわからないから、ネットで調べてみてくれない？）

〇 be familiar with......：....... に精通している・熟知している

・I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with this area.
（すみません、この地域は詳しくないんです）

・Are you thinking of switching your phones ? Go ask Tim for help. He's familiar with this kind of stuff.
（携帯変えるの？ティムにきいてみたらいいよ。彼は携帯とかに詳しいからね）

〇 deepen：深くする

・Over the years, my love for her deepened.
（ここ数年で私の彼女に対する愛情は深まった）

・The economic crisis in the country is deepening day by day.
（その国の経済の危機は日に日に深刻になっている）

・We used to argue with each other on everything, but looking back on it, I think those fights have deepened our relationship.
（わたしたちはかつて何かにつけて口論していたけど、振り返ってみると、そのおかげで私たちの関係が深まったんだと思います）

〇 expand：拡大する

・The well-known izakaya chain restaurant expanded their business in the late 1990's.
（その有名な居酒屋チェーンは、1990年後半にビジネスを拡大した）

・I think it's too early for us to expand our business. Let's wait and see for a while until we find out how our ongoing project goes.
（まだ事業を拡大させるのには早すぎると思うんだ。今進行中のプロジェクトがどうなるかわかるまでもう少し様子をみましょう）

今日ご紹介した、辞書で気になる言葉を

どんどん引いていくという方法は

・自分にとって興味のある言葉

・興味のある言葉の関連語

をチェックしていけるというメリットがあります。

"なかなか覚えられない"

"この単語ってとっつきにくいな"

"わたしに必要？"

など、思うことがあれば、是非一度この方法もやってみてください(^^)
