In order to reduce the disappearance of foreign technical intern trainees, the Immigration Bureau is considering creating rules for changing jobs

In 2023, the number of foreigners who disappeared during "technical intern training" was the highest ever, at 9,753 which is equivalent to 1.9% of all technical intern trainees (1,765 of them were Myanmar nationals).

From 2027, a new residence status called "employment for skill develpment" will be introduced that will allow people to change jobs after working for more than two years, but it appears that the Immigration Bureau has also begun considering ways to reduce disappearances under the current technical intern training program.

Specifically, the Immigration Bureau is preparing to issue rules this year that take trainees' interests into consideration, such as clarifying the cases in which job changes are permitted and allowing them to work part-time while changing jobs.

We hope that this new rule will promote the creation of an environment in which as many foreign workers as possible can work comfortably in Japan.
