#120 翻訳サイトに頼りっぱなし (Rely too much on machine translation)

個人的にはシンガポールは文化的には日本人にとって一番住みやすい外国、もしくはシンガポールがだめだったら他の国で生きていくの難しいかもと思ったり、思わなかったり。。。治安もよいし、日本のものも手に入りやすいし、英語が通じる。なんだかんだ日本人にとって英語って、他の言語よりはちょっとは慣れているっていう感じがある気がする。

そしてシンガポールで仕事をしているとやはり「英語できるんでしょ」っていうことになりがち。個人的には聞く話す書くはあまり問題ないのですが、「読む」はかなりハードル高い気がしています。遅すぎて。。。いや、本当に遅いのです。結果翻訳エンジンに頼りがち。いや、もう翻訳エンジンで十分かも。特に英語なら。そうして英語読解力はどんどん落ちていく（残念）え、みなさん使ってますよね（涙目）？

リーディングに関しては頼りっぱなしと言っていいDeepL先生が認知されてきたのは2020年初期。Google trend(2022)の検索結果を見てみると長らく庶民にとっては一位独走していたGoogle翻訳（赤い線）が直近ではだいぶDeepL（青い線）が迫ってきている様子が見られます。個人的な感想ですが英語、日本語のやり取りだとDeepLはかなり行けます。なんというかちょっと文脈をよみすぎて気持ちが悪いくらいです。「本日は晴天なり」といれると「testing a microphone（マイクをテストしています）」と翻訳されます。

今回のデータでちょっとツボだったのは、Google trendは関連キーワードというのを表示してくれるのですが、その注目一位が「deepl 翻訳 バレる」だったこと。いま、テスト学生の皆さんは期間中なのでしょうか？思わず検索してみると、やはり機械翻訳だとバレるかという記事がいっぱい。いや自分が学生だったら絶対使っちゃう（すみません）。いまでも長い文章を読むときにはほぼDeepL。このままDeepL搭載のメーラーとかメッセンジャー作ってみようかな。いや、あるかなもう？

I personally believe Singapore is one of the best fit country for Japanese people to live. Or I would say if you (Japanese) feel it difficult to live in Singapore you might not be able to live away from Japan (Maybe…). Its as safe as in Japan, easy to get Japanese product (thanks to don don donki…) and English availability. While Japanese are known for not good at speaking English, we are still familiar with English much more than other languages in general.

When I tell people that I work in Singapore to Japanese, of course I'll get the expectation that I'm good at English. Of course, not really… Personally I'm happy to speak, listen and writing but not for reading… My reading is too slow. Thanks god, we now have machine translation like google and deepl. They are powerful enough to give me rough understanding about documents. In the end, my reading skill get even worse (Sad). Don't you use them??

DeepL which I rely too much on reading long documents came up to the market in early 2020. By then, I assume google translation was the only choice for our daily personal use and it was not very smart for Japanese to use. Search result of Google trend (2022) shows that now DeepL is as recognized as google translation. Personally I feel DeepL gives enough translation quality for Japanese. I sometimes even feel that it reads the context too much. For example, there is a very famous sentence in Japanese for mic testing "Honjitsu ha seiten Nari (today is a fine day)". That sentence is translated in "Testing a microphone" surprisingly!!

What I found interesting from data today is about associated rising words. The top one shown was "DeepL translation recognized". Is it an exam period for Japanese students now? It seems people wants to use deepL for their English assignment(?) but they are scared of being recognize by teachers (Maybe) Lol. Well I definitely would use it if I'm a student (sorry). Now I proudly (?) use it for reading long documents. Well maybe it faster to develop a deepL incorporated mailer or messenger! How do you think?
