#15 ひげの思い込み (Myth about beard)

ひげというのは不思議なもの。髪の毛に近い形態をしているが、髪の毛とは明らかに違う触り心地。人生の初期には生えていないのに、なぜか中盤から生えてくる。

髪の毛が薄くなってきたという話を聞くことはあるけれど、ひげが薄くなってきたという話はあまり聞かない。（聞かないだけで起きてはいるのかもしれない）人間のひげは、猫のひげのように機能的な役割をもっているわけでもなさそうな気がする。ひげをはやしたら急にバランス感覚が良くなったという話もあまり聞かない。（聞かないだけで起きてはいるのかもしれない）。そんな生物学的な機能の分かりにくいひげも、見た目などではそれなりに大きい仕事をしているように見える。

そしてここでまた不思議な秘密を発見する。2014年に貝印株式会社では、ひげによって見た目で得したことがあるか、そしてあなたの周りのひげをはやした人は見た目で得をしているかという調査を行っている（上図）。ひげをはやした人が自分で感じているほど周りの人は得をしてるとは思っていないという悲しい調査結果。いや、そもそもひげをはやしている人自信も半数以上は「損をしている」と自分で感じているようにも見える。

じゃあ、なんで生やしているのよ？とい疑問が湧くのももっとも。いやいや面倒くさいから許してほしいというヒゲ男性諸氏の、強い主張が聞こえるようで心強い。でも実はこの調査をみるまで自分ではカッコいいと思ってやっていたのに、周りからは小汚いと思われてるらしいとこの調査で分かってしまって、照れくさいと思っていることは内緒にしておこう。いやいやいや。

Beard has been a long time myth for human being (?). It looks similar to hair but the texture is totally different from hair. You don't have it when you are young and have it as you get older, why?? 

You hear that hair gets thinner you seldom hear that beard does (I haven't heard of it but maybe it does). I don't think it has functional roles like how it does for animals (I haven't heard of it but maybe it does). I have never heard that people improve their sense of balance after having beard (Again I haven't heard about it but maybe some do). While beard does not have functional meaning (?), I think it has huge impact on people's outlook.

Then I found interesting data. Kaijirushi (2014) disclosed if people feels that they look good because of beard and if you know people who looks good because of beard (The chart above). Sadly It proves that people do not think you look good as much as you think you do, very sad. it seems that even more that half of people with beard themselves think that it is disadvantage. 

Well if so, a question would be why you have beard?? Common justification from beard people could be "IT IS SO TROUBLESOME to shave it everyday!" Thank you people for the strong support for this claim. Of course, I will keep it secret that I THOUGHT beard contributes to look you good before knowing that people actually see it doesn't. Ummm, I'm embarrassed a bit...
