#73 週休3日あったら何しよう？（4 day workweek discussion）

運が悪いというのか、きちんと計画を立ててないというのか。僕が日本にいるとシンガポールに祝日があり、日本は祝日じゃないという理由で営業日になる。一方日本の祝日は他の国が休みでないのでなかなか休めないという出張中ならではの悩みがつきまとう。２年ぶりの日本出張では、シンガポールの正月（旧正月）を逃すという失態。この際好きな日に休めばいいのにとも思うのですが、貧乏性で出張中はやれる仕事を全部やりたいという想いに駆られてつい仕事をしてしまう。貧乏性。これは英語で説明しづらい単語が出てきた。

そもそもコロナ期間中ほぼ在宅仕事だったため、休日なのか平日なのかがわかりにくくなっているという現状はなくもない。というわけで（？）個人的には旅行などで長期間を休むということがなくなると、休日を持て余してもいるというのが実態ではあります。そんななか日本でも週休３日制が議論されていたりされていなかったりするということを聞きまして調べてみました。

エラベル(2021)によると週休３日制に関しては賛成、どちらかといえば賛成を含めると約80%の方が賛成と意見を表明しているということでした。まあまあそうなりますよね。ちなみに同じ調査の別質問によるとすでに週休３日制の働き方をしているという方も2.9%いたとのこと。すすんでる！

ここで気になるのは約13%の人が同じく反対と言っているのを多いと取るか少ないととるか。心配事があるということは分かる気がする。たとえば給料はどれだけ安くなるんだろうか、、、とか。シンプルに平日5日が4日にへるということは80%になるのか？？年収400万円の人は320万円になる？？休みが多くなっても、使うお金がなくなっちゃうかしら。でもその分勉強して転職したり、副業したりをしたい人だと、むしろ人生は充実するのか？？それも魅力。

ちなみに日本で週休二日制が定着してきたのは1990年代の前半のようですよ。それまでは週休一日でそこからまだ30年しか（！）経っていないのです。週休二日になるときもいろいろ議論があったんだろうな。同じく2日も休んだら仕事に戻れないかもとか、給料が減っちゃうみたいな議論もあったんだろうな。そのときにどういう議論がされていたのかもこんど調べてみよ。

I'm not sure if I'm lack of luck or I don't plan well. When I'm in Japan, I miss public holidays in Singapore. Also I work on Japan holidays since other countries are not in holiday… That is the toughest part of long business trips. I'm in Japan at the first time in 2 years and I miss the most exciting holiday in Singapore, Runa new year. Well I should think about just taking random off whenever I can take but in the end I always think that I want to fully utilize my business trip schedule… I guess I'm kind of workaholic. 

Actually since we worked basically from home for 2 years in Singapore under pandemic, I can not well differentiate weekday and weekend for a long time.
 Anyway without having travel with long off, I even can not spend my current 2 day weekend efficiently. So I'm wondering how the discussion for 4day workweek goes in Japan. How I'm going to spend my weekend if it is 3 days…

According to ELABEL (2021), around 80% of people are agreed on having 3 day weekend (including agree and strongly agree). Not surprising honestly. By the way 2.9% of people have already experienced the system! That is advanced!! 

On the other hand, around 13% of people disagreed on 4day workweek system. Do you think this % is low or high?? I can tell there are some concerns to be discussed. For example, if how much of your salary would be decreased? Simply working days would be decreased from 5 days to 4 days. So maybe 80% decrease for your salary? Currently average annual salary for Japanese working person is around 40K USD (Very roughly). So it goes down to 32K USD? Even if you have longer off you wouldn't have enough money to spend those longer weekends?? But you also can spend it for side work or study to get a new Job? Then your life can be richer?

By the way, it seems current 2 day weekend system has been applied to Japanese culture only since early 1990th! Weekend meant 1 day off (Sunday) at the time and only 30 years have passed since then. It is not difficult to imagine that there were many discussions to move to new 5 working day system. It would be interesting to check what were discussed at that time :) to see what has been changed since them!!
