#76 英語と給与 (How much English contributes to your salary in Japan)

みなさんはビジネス英語と日常英語と聞くとどちらのほうが難しいと感じるのだろうか。一般的にはビジネスレベルと答えた方のほうが英語レベルが高いと求人情報的にはなっているような気がする（そんなことない？）。そして個人的に15年英語圏で暮らしていて思うのは、「日常会話って難しい」である。仕事の会話はそもそもそのジャンルに詳しいのでなんとでもなる、というかそもそも職業柄横文字も多くて日本語を話していてもペネトレーション（？）とか言ったりるする（ひどい）。

一方、日常会話で「あなた何座？」とかって聞かれたりすると、何座って、牡牛座だけど、牡牛座って何？みたいなちょっと変な疑問が湧いたりする。シンプルに単語がわからないことが多いのです。でもお金を稼ぐにはビジネスレベルでないといけないとは。。。

でも英語を話せるとどれだけ儲かるの？っていう下世話な疑問は実は結構なトピックらしく、いろいろな切り口の調査を発見しました。
求人検索エンジン「スタンバイ」調べ（2019）によると、パート・アルバイトの求人で英語が必須要件であるかどうかで時給の中央値（ぴったり真ん中にいる人の給与）が1.3倍になるとのこと。ほう。悪くないですね。でも仕事の大変さも1.3倍になったりするか。。。？

上のグラフはDaijob.com(2022)調べによるもので英語のレベル別に正社員の給与がどうなるかを示したもののようです。なんかちょっと不思議なグラフではありますが、ざっくりいうと年齢が上がるにつれて英語ができることが給与に跳ね返る度合いが大きい（？）、特になぜだか男性の場合はTOEICでいうと735点以上ないとあまり意味はなさそう。ちなみにこの調査ではTOEIC735点以上をビジネス会話レベル以上と定義しているようです。

個人的にはオーストラリアに留学する際に留学エージェントに大学院に行くにはTOEICで例えると何点くらい必要なのですか？という今から考えるとなんとも言えない質問に対して、満点じゃないと無理じゃないですかと笑顔で答えられ、遠い目になったことを思い出します。（当時のスコア550点くらい）。あぁ、話せるようになってよかった。

In Japan, there is a standard "Business English" and " Daily English" to show the level of English skill. Generally "Business English" is considered to be higher level than "Daily English" level (I guess). Personally I do think daily conversation is much more difficult than business English though. For work, you are basically familiar with the topics since you the specialist in that area. Especially my industry imports many words from foreign languages. So we naturally put those words into our coversation. Katakana framework is so convenient…

In a meantime, it requires much more wider coverage of vocabulary than work. You have to talk about culture, horoscope, health etc which I feel that I vocabulary is very limited for those. Anyway in Japan, you are required to be "Business" level to get global job.

It seems "how much you can earn more if you speak English" is such a topic in Japan and I found many researches which mention about it.
Standby (2019) shows that for part-time jobs which requires English, wage per hour increase almost 1.3 times higher than other jobs. Ok, not too bad… if the burden doesn't also go 1.3 times bigger Lol. 

The chart above refers to Daijob.com(2022) which explains how the English level contributes to your salary for full time employee. This defines "Business level" as TOEIC score above 735. This chart has many complicated implication about Japanese culture which made me feel also complicated. Roughly, it seems English level contributes more of your salary when you get older, maybe in Japanese context "higher position". Also it has to be "business level" to get more than average. 

Personally this story reminds me of a story when I prepared to go to Australia for my master. I asked a strange(?) question to the agent (Strange from my current understanding about required English level). How much of score did I have to have in TOEIC to study in master? She smiled to me and said you can not be able to survive if you don't get full score. My score at the time was around 550 out of 9X0…
