#136 ピンとこない数字 (Stats which don't make sense to you)

湿度100%という数字をみた台風中の東京。湿度100%って雨のことですか？（もちろん違います）世の中って意外と分からない数字だらけですよね。ちなみに分かっていても、あれっ？ってなる数字もありますよね。僕46才なのですがここ数年伸長が0.5cmずつ伸びてるんですよね。そんなことあります？体重もたまに違和感があるくらい増えていることがありますが、それはだいたい現実逃避です。。。

調査を生業にしているとこの「違和感」があるということばには良く直面します。計算ミスってるときとかにはこの「違和感」に助けてもらうときもあります。計算し直したらやっぱり間違えてた、みたいな。納得がいかなくて、でも説明できないときに「違和感」と理不尽に使われるときもなくはないです。正しい数字でもあるんだけど、数字の集計方法で違和感ができるときもあったりします。

上のグラフは国勢調査(2020)の結果から日本人の最終学歴を性ｘ年代別に集計したものになります。これみて、「まあ、こんな感じかなぁ」って納得できる人どれくらいいますか？どういう感想持つんだろう。大学卒業者多すぎない？ってなりますか。それとも高校卒業者多くない？って思いますか。もちろん数字は正しいのですが、卒業した学校や、住んでいる場所で全然割合が違うのです。これを全国で、一律に性別でくくってしまっているので、誰の感覚にも合わない数字になってしまっている可能性あるり。

僕の場合40代で文系、なんとなく周りは男女同じくらいの割合だと思っていたので女性の大学卒率（23%）が男性（38%）とこんなに違うという数字をみると「なるほど」となったりします。でもやっぱり20代になるとそんな差もなくなっているのを見ると、時代は良くなっていると安心したりもします。ちなみに自分の「違和感」は大概信用できないので、世の中にいっぱ調査の数字があることに感謝（深々とお辞儀）

Just so a figure 100% humidity in Tokyo under typhoon yesterday. Does "100% humidity" mean rain? (Of course not) Actually we are surrounded by so many unknow figures. By the way, there are stats which you know the meaning but you don't feel it real or which don't make sense to you. I'm 46 year old. My height increased by 0.5cm for few years. It doesn't make any sense to me. In a meantime, I often feel that my weight increased a lot more than I expected but that is mostly real (Too sad)…

Being involved in marketing research industry, we often face to this "sense of discomfort". I have been rescued by this sense, when for example I made mistakes and found them because of it. Also it is used when you don't agree with the stats but can not explain it. It often sounds unreasonable… You also will have this sense of discomfort even if the stats are correct but it is shown in not reasonable way….

The chart above is from Japan census (2020) which shows the by age group academic record. I'm just wondering how many of you can feel that this is somehow expected or fit to your sense. Do you feel high school graduates are more than you thought? or Uni graduates are more that you expected? This is from Japan sense so I expect that this chart is close to reality. However this % is totally different by area you live in Japan. But this shows national summary. So it made this figure unreal to everybody.

I'm 40 year old and I was law student. Then I see my world almost half male and half female. So this figure (Male 38%, Female 23%) surprised me a bit. Good finding is that for youngers, there is almost no gender gap. Japan is getting better (relieved). By the way, I don't trust my "sense" at all, so I appreciate work from research agencies providing so many world stats to us…
