日本の技術ーつまみ細工について

「これ、本当に手作業で作ったの？とても素晴らしい！」

海外旅行で日本にいらっしゃったお客様が発した言葉、

私はとても嬉しく誇らしい一言でした。

"Did you make this by hand? It's amazing!"

I was so proud when one of my customers from oversea involuntary said so.

こんにちは。竹林裕子です。

私は数年前まで、京都で着物のお店を持っていました。

そのお店には海外からのお客様が7割程度、日本のいろんな技術に感動したり関心を持って頂きました。

今日はその中でも、とても人気がある「つまみ細工」について、お話ししようと思います。

Hi I'm Yuko. I owned a Kimono shop in Kyoto a few years ago.

70% of my customers were foreigners and they were impressively interested in Japanese traditional skills.

Today I will introduce "Tsumami zaiku" which is one of the very popular traditional items.

つまみ細工は、小さな正方形の布を手やピンセットでつまんで接着しパーツを作り、そのパーツを組み合わせて作ります。

つまみ細工は江戸時代発祥と言われているので、およそ400年の歴史があります。

絹は今も昔も高級品。

着物を仕立てた後の余り布をそのまま捨てるのが「もったいない」という日本人独特の精神から、その余り布を使って作ったのが始まりとされています。

つまみ細工は、舞妓さんや振袖を着る時の簪（かんざし）に多く使われるほか、帯留にもよく使われます。

"Tsumami zaiku" is made of some parts which are clothes pinched and stuck together by hand or tweezers.

It was born in Edo era and has 400 years history.

Silk is an expensive material now and in the past. "Tsumami zaiku" was started with the Japanese uniqe sprite that it's not a good idea to just throw away an extra silk clothe after making Kimono.

"Tsumami zaiku" is often used by Maiko(apprentice geisha) when they wear Furisode(a kind of Kimonos) as Kanzashi(hair accessory) or Obidome(kimono accessory).  

特に舞妓さんがつける「つまみ簪（かんざし）」は月ごとにデザインが決まっていて、見る人に四季の移り変わりを感じさせてくれます。

江戸～大正時代あたりまでは、つまみ細工をつくる専門の職人さんがいましたが、今は着物を着る人は少なくなり職人さんも数えるほどしかいません。

1つ1つのパーツをまったく同じように作る技術は、職人さんならでは。

Tsumami zaiku for Maiko is called "Tsumami Kanzashi" and designed monthly so that people feel the change of four seasons.

In Edo to Taisho era, there were some traditional Tsumami zaiku craftsman, but nowadays there is only a few ones since the less people wear Kimono.

It's an amazing skill that the traditional craftsman makes one part which is exactly same as another one.

私たちが職人さんの様に作るのは何年も訓練が必要ですが、趣味程度ならは初めて経験される方でも楽しく作ることが出来ます。

つまみ細工は、海外の人だけでなく日本人にとっても珍しいものなので、日本人も体験するととても楽しいです。

このように、とても細かい手作業や技術が日本にはとても多くありますが、後継者がいないため時代とともになくなっていくものも多くあります。

高度な技術や伝統工芸を守っていくことが、日本の今後の課題の一つです。

It takes many years to become like a craftsman but it's always open for beginners to enjoy it as a hobby.

Tsumami zaiku is such a fun experience for both Japanese and foreigners.

In addition of Tsumami zaiku, there are a lot of traditional culture which require fine motor skill and technology but most of them is disappearing due to lack of successors.

It’s a hard work but we, Japanese, have to keep the high quality tradition for the future.
