「日本人サラリーマンの日常」

I usually write about Japanese traditional culture but today I will change my taste. I will write about "Daily life of Japanese office workers"!

いつもは日本の伝統文化を中心にコラムを書いていますが、今日はちょっと趣向を変えて日本人のサラリーマンの日常を書こうと思います。

I was an office worker until a few years ago. (So was Ayumi!)

Nowadays, about 70% of Japanese population are office workers.

In Japanese education at school, they focus on how to be an office worker. Therefore, it is rare to become an business owner or challenge the small business. 

People who challenge to start a new business has been gradually increasing recently.

私も数年前はサラリーマンでした。（あゆみも数年前まではバリバリ働くキャリアウーマンでしたよ！）
現在、日本人の7割程度がサラリーマンです。
日本の学校教育は、サラリーマンのなるための教育がメインなので、日本人で起業したりスモールビジネスにチャレンジする人は少数です。
それでもここ数年は起業する人が増えてきました。

So what do the most office workers do? They work from Monday to Friday and take day off on weekends. Those who work on shifts go to work about 22 days in a month and take 8 days off. 

まず多くのサラリーマンは、月曜から金曜まで働き、土日が休みです。
シフト制の人は月に22日程度働き、8日程度不定休で休みます。

There are some companies with flex systems, but most companies usually start their business from 9 am to 10 pm. They come to work with a lot of stress on a crowded train.

Japanese are already very tired just to survive the commuting..!

フレックス制の会社もありますが、ほとんどの会社は始業が9時～10時の間が多く、そのため満員電車で多くのストレスを溜めながら出社します。
出社しただけで多くの日本人はすでに疲れています！

They work in the morning then take lunch break. There are some people who continue working during lunch or finish lunch break earlier than given 1 hour break. 

そして午前中仕事をして、お昼休憩を取ります。
お昼休憩もご飯を食べながら仕事をする人、1時間休憩時間があるのに早々にご飯を食べ終わり仕事をする人も多いです。

They work in the afternoon then the business hour ends. But nobody go home on time. They work overtime in Japanese culture.

午後も仕事をして終業。
でも日本には残業文化が根強く残っていて、毎日定時で帰れる人はごくわずかです。

Japanese says "Pardon me, but I have to go now." when they go home earlier than others. That implies they feel really bad and feel sorry to leave people who are still working.

日本人は周りの人より先に帰宅する時、挨拶として「お先に失礼します」と言います。
「お先に失礼します」とは、「みんなまだ仕事をしているのに、私だけ先に帰って申し訳ない」という意味を含んでいます。

From other culture's point of view, it might be strange way. Of course everybody wants to leave the office with a presentation, but they feel a little cramped when leaving.

毎日定時で帰宅する文化の国の人から見たら、おそらく理解できない挨拶だと思います。（そして、日本人の多くは、本当は提示で堂々と帰りたいのに、ちょっと肩身の狭い思いをして帰ります）

For those stressful Japanese working life, going out for drink is one of the things which release the stress! For men, Izakaya (Japanese style pub) or standing bar is popular. 

そんなストレスフルな日本のサラリーマンやOLは、退社後に飲みに行くことがストレス発散の1つです。
男性同士であれば居酒屋や立ち呑み屋に行くこともあるかもしれません。

At Izakaya, they have a lot of nice food for alcohol. I like bake taro, sashimi or simmered pork (in photo below).

居酒屋はお酒が進むアテがたくさんあります。
ちなみに私が好きな居酒屋メニューはとろろ焼きやお造り、角煮です。

They go very well with Shochu (Japanese distilled spirit)!!

私が好きな芋焼酎によく合います！笑

At Izakaya, they have various beers, whisky, cocktail, sake, wine,,, If you don't have enough time, Standing bar is a good option. You will get nice feeling and refreshed in a short time.

お酒の種類も豊富で、ビール、ウイスキー、サワー、カクテル、日本酒、焼酎、ワインなどが数種類ずつ置かれています。
時間のないときは立ち呑み屋さんが便利です。
短時間でほろ酔いになり、気分転換になります。

For women, they go to nice and fancy restaurant. They call it "Joshi-kai". Joshi means girls and Kai means party.

女性同士だと「女子会」と称して、オシャレなレストランに行くこともあります。

They enjoy fruits liquor or wine and have some cake or dessert. They chat and chat about boss, beauty, fashion, resent surprising report etc. Girls talk never stops like the same thing happens in all over the world!

そんな時はフルーツたっぷりの果実酒やワインを飲んだり、食後のデザートにケーキを食べたりして、会社の愚痴、近況報告、美容、ファッションなどなど、おそらく皆さんと同じような内容をとりとめもなく話します。

But normally they cannot go home on time so it is very rare to have party like this at the first place...

ただ、現実は定時に帰れないことが多くあるので、このストレス発散法もたまにしか行けません。

Today, I introduced Japanese worker's daily life and this is what I used to be until a few year ago.

今回は、日本人サラリーマンの日常を書いてみました。（これは数年前の私でもあります）

It might be considered as miserable but I enjoyed it somehow! I will write about the good point of being Japanese worker next time! See you^^

これだけ書くとちょっと悲惨ですが、楽しいこともありますよ。
次回はサラリーマンの楽しいところを書こうと思います！
