今週もThe Google Developer News Showを英語で見ていきましょう。

今週はややマニアックな話題が多いような気がします。SpeakerはDeveloper AdovocateのImothy Jordanさんです。

Angular Version 9

Angular Verion 9 リリースのアナウンスです。AngularはGoogleのAngularチームが主体となって開発しているオープンソースのWebアプリフレームワークです。

The 9.0.0 release of Angular is now available.
And this is a major release that spans the entire platform,
including the framework, Angular material, and the command line interface.

"span"はここでは「及ぶ」というような意味で「このリリースはプラットフォーム全体に及ぶメジャーリリースです」というような意味ですね。

This release switches applications to the Ivy compiler and runtime by default and introduces improved ways of testing components.

IVってなってるのは Ivyで、コンパイラ＆ランタイムのコードネームです。

「このリリースはアプリをデフォルトでIvyに切り替えます。そして、テストコンポーネントの改善した方法を導入します」

"default"は「初期値、初期設定」という意味でこれはIT業界だけではなく、一般的にもかなり浸透していますね。本来は金融用語で「不履行」のことで、プログラミングにおいて、初期値というよりは、値が設定されてない場合（＝変数の参照が不履行だった場合）というような意味合いで使われたのが始まりだと思われます。

"and"が続くので、上記の知識がないとどことどこがandなのかわかりにくいですが、"introduces"は動詞なので、同じ動詞の"switches"と並列関係にあり、主語と動詞だけを抜き出すと"This release switches ... and introduces ..."となります。

「更新リストの詳細はポストにあります」

"extensive"は"extend"の形容詞系なので「広い」のイメージですが、ここでは「詳細な」が当てはまりそうです。"the post"はブログポストのことですね。

ML-fairness-gym

Machine-learning systems have been increasingly deployed to aid in high-impact decision making,

「MLシステムはますますインパクトの強い意思決定に役立てるために展開されています」

"increasingly" 「ますます」、"aid in" 「〜に役立つ」、"high-impact"は「インパクトの強い」、"decision making"は「意思決定」ですね。インパクトは「衝撃」と訳してもいいですが、インパクトのほうが通じそうですね。

such as determining criminal sentencing, child welfare
assessments, who receives medical attention, and many other settings.

"such as"「〜のような」の後に例が並べられます。

Understanding whether such systems are fair is crucial.

"fair"「公正な」、crucial"「極めて重要な」

「そのようなシステムが公正であるかどうかの理解は極めて重要だ」というのが問題提起で、それを解決するための手段をリリースしたと続きます。

To help with this, we have released ML-fairness-gym,

「ML-fairness-gymをリリースしました。

a set of components for building simple simulations that explore potential long-run impacts of deploying machine-learning-based decision systems in social environments.

"explore"は「調査する」

"long-run"は「長期にわたる」の意味で、映画などがヒットしたときに公演が続くことを「ロングラン」と一般でも使いますね。

"in social environments"は、そのまま訳して「社会環境で」、ここでの意味は実環境でということでしょう。

"machine-learning-based"は「MLベースの」で通じますかね。"-based"はよく使いますね。

New in Chrome 80

Chromeリリースの話です。Chromeのリリース情報はThe Google Developer News Showで出てくる頻度が高いですね。

Chrome 80 recently rolled out with a bunch of new stuff for developers.

"bunch of"はいつもの通りですね。

It included a support for modules and workers, optional chaining in JavaScript, new origin trials, and more.

"workers"は「労働者」のことではなくService Workerのことで、"optional chaining"はJSの新しい糖衣構文ですね。"origin trials"は、簡単にいうとexperimentalな機能を有効にするoriginを指定する機能です。ここはもう完全に英語というよりはIT/Web用語を知っているかどうかですね。

"snippet"は「切れ端」の意味で、"code snippets"で短いサンプルコードのことです。

Glass Enterprise Edition 2

Glass Enterpriseが開発者向け販売を開始したというニュースです。

Glass Enterprise Edition 2 was launched last May,
can be purchased directly from one of our hardware resellers, and is now available for you to build upon.

"purchase"「購入する」で、"can be purchased"で「購入可能になる」ですね。

"reseller"はそのまま訳すとre-sellerで「再販売業者、転売人」となり、良い意味でも悪い意味でも？使われます。ここでは公式な再販街業者のことで、そこを強調したい場合は"authorised reseller"と言います。

ここでは触れられていませんが、ブログポストの方では販売業者がCDW、Mobile Advance、SHIと書かれています。日本には馴染みのない業者ですね。

"build upon"はこれだけだとわかりませんが、アプリを作れるということですね。

オープンソースのアプリやコードサンプルを公開しているということです。

Improving Smart Home Action Reviews

Smart Home Actionのレビューについてのニュースです。

We recently made some improvements to the review process for Smart Home Actions on Google

「レビュープロセスを改善しました」

aimed at making the experience more transparent in the Actions console
and reducing the time it takes for your actions to get approved.

"aimed at"「〜向けである」

"transparent"「透明な」

ここは難しいところはないですね。

The path to DX deprecation

Androidのコンパイラについてのニュースです。

D8 is the default Dex Compiler.

DexコンパイラというのはJava/KotlinをAndroid上で事項出来るDex形式にコンパイルするツールです。DexというのはDalvik Executableの略で、AndroidのランタイムDalvikから名付けられています。現在はART(Android Runtime)が使われています。

And if you haven't already, now is the time to migrate to D8.
On February 1, 2021, DX will be fully removed from Android Studio and any other build environments.

しばらく前からD8が推奨になっていましたが、2021年2月1日に旧来のコンパイラえあるDXはAndroidの開発環境から完全に削除されるということです。

まとめ

今回は全体的に専門用語が多く出てきて、その分英語としては簡易な表現が多かった印象です。

知ってる領域については聞き取りやすく、知らない領域の場合は英文法としては理解出来ても、何を言っているのかわからない、となりそうです。

英語のニュースなどを読み聞きしていると、同様なことが起こるのですが、ニュースの場合は伝え方が曖昧だったり、場合によっては表現が正確ではないことがあり、調べた結果が徒労に終わることがあります。

わからないことは調べればちゃんと分かるという点においても、Googleからの公式情報であるという信頼感があって安心できますね。
