今週も"Google Developer News Show"が公開されたので、動画を見ていきましょう。今回のSpeakerはDeveloper AdvocateのMeghan Mehtaさんです。

Moving Forward from Chrome Apps

Chrome Apps終了のお知らせです。

すでに日本でもニュースになっていて、「Chromeアプリ終了」というのを見て、「Chromeブラウザ」が終了するのか！と勘違いした人もいたようですね。

The web platform has made substantial progress
since the launch of Chrome Apps in 2013.

「かなりの」段階的に廃止する」

web platformはかなり進歩しました。

launch
「開始、立ち上げ」。ここでは"the launch"なので名詞として使われていますね。

直訳すると、「2013年のChrome Appsの開始以来」。日本語だと「2013年にChrome Appsが開始して以来」と言ったほうが自然な気がします。

With this continued progress, we will
begin phasing out support for Chrome Apps
across all operating systems starting in March 2020
when the Chrome Web Store will stop accepting new Chrome Apps.

「段階的に廃止する」

starting in March 2020 when ...
ここでの"when"は文法的には関係副詞で"on which"と置き換えられます、みたいな説明がされますが、前の文から順番に「2020年3月から始まります」「新規アプリの受付を停止します」と聞き取れれば、つながりはなんとなくわかるでしょう。

Developers will be able to update existing Chrome
Apps through June 2022.

前の文で新規アプリの受付停止時期を説明したのに対して、既存アプリの受付アップデート期限を説明しています。新規とアップデートで期限やその他の扱いが違うのはほかのアプリストアでもよくあるやり方ですね。

BazelCon 2019

2019年12月に開催されたBazelCon 2019に関するニュースです。

Last month, the Google Bazel team
hosted its largest Bazel user conference, BazelCon 2019,
an annual gathering of the community surrounding
the Bazel build system.

「取り囲む」。オーディオの「サラウンドシステム、サラウンドスピーカー」などでなじみのある言葉ですね。

開発者や利用者など様々な人が集まるので"surrounding the Bazel build system"という言い方にをしているのでしょう。参加者については次に説明があります。

Over 400 people attended, and over 125 organizations
were represented.

参加者は400人規模ということで、開発者イベントと比較するとそこまで大きくありませんが、まださほど利用者の多くないビルドツールのミートアップとしては大きな規模ですね。

次に、イベントの説明です。

This is the main Bazel event of the year, which
serves as an opportunity for Bazel contributors,
maintainers, and users to meet and learn
from each other, present Bazel migration stories,
educate new users, and collaborate together
on the future of Bazel.

それぞれ「貢献者、維持する人」の意味ですが、オープンソースのコントリビューター、メンテナーと言ったほうがわかりやすいですね。

ここまでとくに説明はありませんでしたが、この文によりBazelがオープンソースであると予測できます。実際には、Googleが社内で使っていたビルドツール「Blaze」をオープンソース化したものが「Bazel」と名付けられたようです。

「安定している、堅固な」の意味ですが、「ロバスト」のまま使うこともありますね。

「必要不可欠な」とも訳せますが、IT業界なら「ミッションクリティカル」のままのほうが伝わるかもしれません。

日本語にすると「課題」とか「要件」でしょうか。指定の方法で起案すると課題番号が割り当てられて処理される、というのが一般的な流れです。

サポートが弱いとたらいまわしにされたり放置されたりするのに対して、エキスパートが直接取り扱ってくれるということです。

まとめ

今回はニュースが3つのみ、しかも終了のお知らせとイベント報告、サポートプランの追加とあまり技術的な話がなく、ちょっと面白みがありませんでしたね。

その分専門用語が少なく聞き取る分には難しいところはなかったと思いますが、個人的には自分の興味が薄れるとなかなか頭に入ってこないです。

技術的に面白いものは例えばカンファレンスでの発表などがありますが、こちらは時間が長いことが多く、ときには言葉が聞きづらかったり英語としては正しくないこともあるので、英語学習という意味では微妙なこともあります。

定期的に公開されて、ちょうどいい長さで、内容が面白く、英語も正しいコンテンツを見つけるのはなかなか骨が折れますね。オススメがあればえてください！
