艶容な国宝十一面観音像の立ち姿。【淡海シリーズⅢ】　Standing appearance of the 11th face Kanzeon Bodhisattva statue, a glamorous national treasure.

彦根で用事を済ませ、その足で、長浜市の向源寺に行ってきた。以前から行ってみたいと思っていたお寺である。観音堂に安置されている国宝「十一面観世音菩薩像」を見るために。

日本には十一面観音像はたくさんあるが、国宝に指定されているのは全国でわずか7体だけ。その一つが向源寺の観音様である。ちなみに国宝指定されている十一面観音像は、室生寺、法華寺、聖林寺(以上奈良)、道明寺(大阪)、観音寺(京都)、六波羅蜜寺(京都)、そしてここ向源寺。

その中でも向源寺の十一面観音像は、日本彫刻史における最高傑作といわれているものである。

観音像は、聖武天皇の勅願により、白山信仰の祖である泰澄大師が彫ったといわれている。戦国時代に織田信長と浅井長政による姉川の戦いで、堂宇は焼失したが、観音様だけは、住職と門徒たちにより土に埋められて守られた。その場所が表示されていた。

どの十一面観音像は立像がほとんどで、その立ち姿は美しい。よく見ると、腰がほんの少しくねっている。このくねりが十一面観音像の艶姿をさらに際立たせている。

Most of the eleven-faced Kannon statues are standing figures, and their standing figures are beautiful. If you look closely, statues waist is slightly twisted. This bend further emphasizes the luster of the eleven-faced Kannon image.
