お釈迦様と因縁深い「菩提樹」と「沙羅樹」　 "Bodhi tree" and "Sara tree" closely related to Shaka-sama

加古川(兵庫県)へ行ったときに、聖徳太子開基伝承の寺院のひとつ「鶴林寺(かくりんじ)」を訪ねた。鶴林寺は西の法隆寺と称され、国宝の太子堂をはじめ数々の文化財を有する、播磨地方有数の寺院である。
目に留まったのが、本堂を挟んで両脇にある「菩提樹」と「沙羅樹」の2本の木。神社で言うなら御神木と同じ意味をもつ木である。

The other day, when I went to Kakogawa (Hyogo Prefecture), I visited "Kakurin-ji", one of the temples of Shotoku Taishi founding tradition. Kakurin-ji Temple is called Horyu-ji Temple in the west and is one of the leading temples in the Harima region, which has many cultural properties including Taishido, a national treasure.
What caught my eye were the two trees, "Bodhi Tree" and "Sara Tree," which are on both sides of the main hall. In a shrine, it has the same meaning as a shinboku.

それぞれの木の横に立て看板があった。それには、下記のような内容のことが書かれ興味を惹いた。菩提樹は、お釈迦様が菩提樹の下で悟りを開いたと言われている木である。
片方の羅紗の木は、お釈迦様が入滅された時に、周辺に羅紗双樹が繁っていたと言われている。ともにお釈迦様との因縁の深い木である。
ともに6月中頃からが花が咲き見ごろになる。

There was a signboard next to each tree. The following content was written in it, which attracted interest. The Bodhi tree is a tree that is said to have been enlightened by Buddha under the Bodhi tree.
It is said that one of the Sara trees was surrounded by Sara twin trees when Shaka-sama was annihilated. It is a tree closely related to Shaka-sama. Both trees are in full bloom from the middle of June.

［菩提樹］
お釈迦様が成道の時、この樹の下で坐禅されたという因縁のある木。
日本ではインド種が生育しないため古来この中国種の木によって菩提を悟られたお釈迦様をしのんできた。

[Bodhiju(tree)]
A tree related to the fact that Buddha was zazen under this tree when Saka-sama was a priest. Since Indian species do not grow in Japan, we have been praying for the bodhi who was enlightened by this Chinese tree from ancient times.

［沙羅樹］
お釈迦様が入滅になる時に、周囲に繁っていた娑羅双樹が枯れ、枝の先がまるで鶴が翔ぶような姿に見えたことから仏教に因縁のある木とされた。これが当寺の名前の鶴林の語源である。
日本ではインド産の木が生育しないため古来、このナツツバキを沙羅と呼んで涅槃に入られたお釈迦様をしのんできた。

[Saraju(tree)]
When the sara tree was destroyed, the sara tree that had grown around it withered, and the tip of the branch looked like a crane flying, so it was considered to be a tree related to Buddhism. This is the etymology of Kakurin, the name of this temple. Since Indian trees do not grow in Japan, this Japanese stewartia has been called Sara for a long time, and it has been a tribute to Nirvana.
