風水的に抜群！？調和をもたらすヤブラン

東京も、やっと涼しい風が吹くようになりました。街歩きをしていると、あまり目立った花がないことに気がつきます。

季節の境目だからでしょうか。真夏の花は影をひそめ、秋の花はまだ時期尚早とばかりに遠慮して？意外とお花を見かけないように感じます。
薔薇が秋の顔で咲いていたり、千日紅のように開花時期が長い花が、プランターで初秋の風に揺られているのは見かけますが。

そんな中、今を旬とばかりに咲いているのが、ヤブラン。と言っても、あまり派手なお花ではないので、景色の中に在ってもスルーされがちかもしれません笑。

ヤブランは、「蘭」という名がついていても、ラン科の植物ではありません。例のごとく、蘭好きな日本人が好んで付ける〇〇蘭の部類です笑。ヤブランの場合、花ではなく葉の形状がランに似ていますね。

日本中に自生し、花壇やお庭の根締め的なポジションでも大活躍のヤブラン。ひなたでも日陰でも元気に育ち、土も選ばず虫も付きにくく、他の植物との相性もよろしく、場所を選ばないけど、さりげなく全体を調和させる。地味めだけど堅実な、野球で言えばセカンドのような役割を担う、チームに
なくてはならない選手です。

ヤブランは晩夏から花が目立ってきます。近所で見かけたのはよくある薄紫色のものでしたが、他にもピンクや白色のものあり、園芸品種は２０種類ほど出回っています。

花の終わった後は、実のように見える種子がびっしりつきます。緑色から黒色へと変化していくので、果実かと思ってしまいますが、実はそうではなく、むき出しの種なんです。ユニークな植物ですよね。

和風のお庭に似合う、とされますが、西洋風なお庭にもしっくりくると個人的には思います。ヤブランのすっとした花姿は、ラベンダーのようにも見えませんか？斑入りの葉や白い葉のものもあり、明るいガーデンの装いにも一役買いそうです。

昔から漢方や生薬としても利用されてきたヤブラン。風水でも縁起物として重宝されている植物です。エネルギーの回復力とバランスをもたらすそうで、北向きのエリアに植えると良い、とのこと。

木陰や草陰などに控えめに咲く姿から、「謙虚」という花言葉を持つヤブラン。謙虚に、しなやかに、そして調和をもたらす。人になぞらえてみたら、なんて素敵な生き方だと思いませんか？

やっと涼しくなってきたのに、季節柄、自律神経が乱れやすくなって、暑く感じたり寒く感じたりの振れ幅が大きい今日この頃。更年期っていうのもあるんだろうな・・・苦笑。


Finally, a cool breeze is blowing through Tokyo. As I walk through the streets, I notice there aren't many noticeable flowers around.

Perhaps it’s because of the seasonal transition. The summer flowers have retreated, and the autumn flowers seem to be holding back, waiting for their time. It feels like a period when flowers are surprisingly scarce. While I occasionally spot roses blooming with an autumnal look or long-blooming flowers like Gomphrena swaying in planters, it’s clear that this is a time between seasons.
Among these, the flower currently in its prime is Yaburan (Lilyturf). But because it’s not a flashy flower, it tends to get overlooked in the scenery.

Yaburan may have "orchid" in its name, but it’s not a member of the orchid family. As with many "orchid-named" plants, the Japanese love to give them the "〇〇orchid" label. In the case of Yaburan, it’s the leaves that resemble orchids, not the flowers.

Lilyturf is a plant that grows naturally throughout Japan and plays a key role in flower beds and gardens. It thrives in both sunlight and shade, isn’t picky about soil, rarely attracts pests, and gets along well with other plants. It doesn’t demand attention but quietly brings harmony to the whole space. It’s like the second baseman in baseball – understated yet indispensable to the team.

Yaburan's flowers become noticeable in late summer. The ones I saw in my neighborhood were the common light purple variety, but there are also pink and white varieties, with about 20 cultivars available for gardening.

After the flowers fade, the plant produces seeds that look like fruit, tightly packed together. These seeds change color from green to black, making them appear like berries, but they’re not – they’re just exposed seeds. It’s a unique plant, isn’t it?

Although Yaburan is often considered to suit traditional Japanese gardens, I personally think it can fit well in Western-style gardens too. Don’t the upright flower spikes resemble lavender? There are also varieties with variegated or white leaves, which could add brightness to any garden.

Yaburan has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and herbal remedies for centuries. It’s also valued in feng shui as a plant that brings good fortune. It’s said to restore energy and balance, and it’s recommended to plant it in north-facing areas.

With its discreet blooms in shaded areas, Yaburan carries the flower meaning of "humility." Quiet, graceful, and bringing harmony – doesn’t that sound like a wonderful way to live if we think of it in human terms?
