もう、春も終わりになると
あじさいの花咲くまでに一汗かこうと
あちこちで運動会やスポーツ大会が
開かれるようになります。
下宿ほうれんそうの仲間たちも
それぞれのアルバイト先の
ソフトボール大会や運動会に出るといって
張りきっておりました。
なかでも、鈍足のはずのコージが
意外なことに一番張りきっていました。
私が日曜日の朝の新聞配達から
帰ってきますと、確か朝６時少し前だと思います。
コージの部屋から
「ハッハッハハハッハハッハ」
とコージの高笑いが聞こえてきました。
ちなみにコージは、毎朝６時前に起きて
ＮＨＫ教育ラジオの英会話３部作と言われる
基礎英語、続基礎英語、英会話を
梯子で聞いておりました。
朝から、バッチリ英語に泥酔する為にです。
　
「あれ、日曜日、基礎英語やってたかな・・・？」
とコージの部屋をノックしますと
コージが高笑いのまま出てきました。
「グッドモーニング・・・ハッハハハハッハハ」
「何がおかしいの？」
「いや、これを喜ばなくて何を喜べと言うんだ」
コージの手には新しいアルバイト先の筒状になった
運動会のパンフレットがシッカリと握られていました。
ちなみに、コージはこぶオジさんとケンカして
クリームパンのベルトコンベヤーを壊滅させて
パン工場をクビになり、大阪船場の今は無き
繊維問屋Ｔにバイトに行っていたのでした。
コージは、

残して部屋に入って行ったのでした。
　
１時間後、コージの愛車センチュリー
（よく政治家や社長が乗っているトヨタの高級車）
に乗って、私とコージは運動会が行われる
グランドに向かったのであります。
ちなみに（今日は”ちなみに”が多くて
申し訳ありません。）コージは、センチュリーの
ローンの為、下宿の部屋代が払えず
年に４ヶ月はセンチュリーのなかで
暮らしていました。当時でローン残高は６００万以上
あったと記憶しています。
グランドでは、守衛のオジさんが社長の
車と間違えて丁重に駐車場まで案内してくれました。
しかし、車を降りる時にバイトとだとバレて
メチャクチャ怒られました。
　
運動会は社長の長い開会の挨拶とともに
始まりました。パン食い競争、二人三脚、
各課対抗リレー、借り物競争、綱引き・・・
そして、お弁当。お弁当は幕の内弁当でした。
お弁当を食べてもコージの出番はやってきません。
しびれを切らした私は
「一体、何に出るの・・・」

コージは、プログラムを指しました。
「後ろ走り競争・・・」

「後ろ向きに走るんだ・・・」

私が驚いていると、コージは出番が近づいたらしく
集合場所に意気揚揚と向かいました。
　
ちなみにレースは、距離１００メートル
２００メートルトラックを半周致します。
ただし、背中を進行方向に向けて走らなくては
なりません。グランドコンディションは
この２日間の快晴のため、極めて良好。
さて、１００メートル２０秒のコージが
どこまでやれるか。出場者はスラリとした
青年６名、そして、我らがラクビーボール
のような体型のコージ君。
位置に着いて、パン！
ピストルの音とともに
７名は走り出しましたが、３人はすぐに
バランスを崩してコケました。
残りの三人も斜めに走ったり、ぶつかったり
ラインから飛び出したり・・・ところで、我らがコージは
エエーウソだろう！・・
スゴイ・・・グランドに集まった皆さんが
歓声を上げました。テントの中の社長さんを始め
みんな驚いて身を乗り出した。

とにかく、早いのであります。
コージは、他の人が半分も走らないうちに
超独走でゴールを切りました。
　
閉会の言葉を言う社長から
「今日は、後ろ向きのカールルイスを
拝見致しました」なんて言ってもらい
ホクホク顔で上機嫌のコージでありました。
ちなみにコージは普通に走って１００メートル
２０秒、後ろむきに走って１９秒だそうです。

今日子は母の勧めるままに３度の見合いをした。
そして３度目の相手と結婚することになった。
