小学校６年生の夏休みに
初めて東京に行った。
大阪から東京まで
新幹線３時間１０分の
初めての一人旅はドキドキだった。
東京には友達がいた。
幼なじみのトオルだ。
父親の転勤で東京に行った悪友だ。
東京駅に着いて東急インというホテルに一泊して
荷物を置いてトオルと待ち合わせをした。
トオルは日暮里の学習塾で夏季講習を
受けるらしく、待ち合わせ時間は午後２時になった。
　
上野の街を行く宛てもなく
うろうろしていると
ガード下で
「君、自衛官にならないか」
とグレーの制服を着たオジサンに
呼びとめられた。
しばらく話を聞いていると
私が小学校６年生と分って

中学卒業したら・・・ぜひ、たずねて来い」
と名刺を渡された。
変な人に声をかけられたくないので
人通りの多い駅前を歩いていたら
若い兄ちゃんに声をかけられた
「君、アンケート協力してよ」
アンケートくらいなら・・・
と思った私が答えていると
その兄ちゃんは
突然やってきた婦人警官２人に
「キャッチセールスは禁止」
と言われ引きずられるように
交番に連れて行かれた。
どうやら悪い人のようやな・・・
と理解した私は
山手線に乗って
夏休みの読書感想文の課題図書だった
「ジョン万次郎漂流記」を
読むことにした。
冷房も効いているし
環状線なので乗り越しても、
また１周回って戻ってくるから安心だった。
ユラユラとした
電車の振動が心地よく
前日深夜までテレビを見ていた睡眠不足も重なってか
いつのまにか眠っていた。
たしか３周回ったが、
目を覚ますのは
どういうわけかお茶の水だった。
　
待ち合わせ場所は上野のビッグボックス？
と言うところだった。
その中のゲームセンターで遊んでいると時間を
忘れて夢中になってしまった。
気がついたら１０時前だった。
慌ててホテルに帰ると
オヤジから電話が入っていた。
「どこに行っていたんだ、
すぐに帰って来い」
９時には帰って勉強している約束だった。
罰として
５泊の予定が２泊３日に
されてしまった。
帰ることになった翌日、
トオルは夏季講習をサボって
新幹線改札口まで
見送りに来てくれた。
もう少し遊びたかったが
小学生の身である。
オヤジに怒鳴られれば
帰るしかない。
「久しぶりに会ったのに
残念やね」
トオルも私も目に涙を溜めていた。
「しばしの別れよ
さらば友よ」
とトオルはカッコつけやがった。
トオルに背中を押されるようにして
私は新幹線に飛び乗った。
そのあと、どんな感じで
帰ったかは思い出せない。
ただ、最近上野の街を歩いても
あのガード下も
あのゲームセンターも
あの新幹線の改札口も
みんな無くなっていた。
ちなみに
そのトオルは
３年後に大阪に戻ってきて
同じ高校に通うことになる。
　

★　桜の木
　
春になると庭園一杯に花開く
桜の花が自慢の宿だった。
「この旅館の女将（おかみ）でございます」
古都の旅館の名物女将と
呼ばれる美佐は、毎晩必ず
その夜泊まる客のすべての部屋に
挨拶して廻る。
ただ挨拶して、廻るだけではない
ほんの１分ほどの決まり切った台詞の
合間に客ごとのポイントをつかむためである。
２０年も、こんな日々を重ねると
泊まり客が男女であれば
一瞬にして不貞の仲かは
勿論のこと、ひょっとしたら
心中もしかねないと勘づくこともある。
そんなときは、その部屋の担当を
陽気な明るい子に任せて雰囲気を
変えたり、場合によっては長年コンビを組んできた
女中頭に任せたりもする。
　
こんなセンスの良い女将の
美佐にもピンチはあった。
父から引き継いだ当時、
この宿は借金まみれだった。
庭園の桜の木は手入れが
行き届かず枯れ木が目立つようになり
大浴場も水漏れで苦情が相次いだ。
料理の味だけは、古くからの
板前連中が頑張ってくれたから
何とか対面を保っていたが、
給料が払えなくなったら、
いくら彼らでも
辞めて行くに違いない。
そんな状況だった。
　
困った美佐は、父の友人で
子供の頃からかわいがってもらった
小谷に相談に行った。
小谷は箱根をはじめ日本中に
旅館チェーンを経営していた。

当時の美佐には、分ったようで分らない話だった。
でも、この話を聞いてから不思議と
商売が上手く行き始めた。
そして、偶然気がついたのだが
桜の木が枯れ始めたのは
旅館の前を走る道のアスファルトで
水はけが悪くなっていたからだった。
お金がなくて手入れを怠ったからではなかった。
たまたま美佐を始め地域の商店街や役所が
街の活性化と称して
アスファルトをレンガ道にした。
すると垂れ下がっていた木々が反り帰ったばかりか、
諦めていた枯れたようになっていた
桜の木までが生き返ったかのように
ぐんぐん天に向かって伸び始め
春には大輪の花を咲かせた。
