休日の大きな駅の改札口。
人目も気にせず、
こんな会話を交わしていた二人がいました。
驚いたのは、年齢で言うならば
６０歳前後の二人でした。
男性が見送る中、
改札口を女性が彼の方を何度も何度も振りかえりながら、
改札からホームの方に歩いて行きました。
その二人の表情。
年齢が年齢でしょうから
顔にはシワもあるし、
頭には白いものも目立ちます。
でも、二人からはオーラが出ているのです。
昔の話ではなくて
今現在シッカリ燃えているってオーラです。
こんな映画のようなシーンを目撃した私は、
「人生捨てたものじゃないなあ。
ぼちぼち生きてりゃ、面白いことあるんや」
なんて希望の火を少し分けて頂いた気分になりました。
青春の恩恵は、年齢性別に関係なく頂けます。
「大好きだよ」

先日、街の不動産屋の社長さんと
ランチを御一緒しました。
１０年くらい前に
私が初めて折り込み広告を打つ時に
いろいろ相談に乗ってもらった方です。
私にとっては恩人です。
当時は自信たっぷりに商売のことを
いろいろ語って頂いた思い出があります。
しかし、今では当時の脂ぎったツヤツヤした顔は
見る影もなく、深いシワと頭の白髪が
目立っていました。
３０年以上ご商売をなさっている方ですが
十数年前、今まで見たことのないような
大金が入ってきたそうです。
それで浮かれてゴルフの会員権や
マンションをいくつも買ったそうです。
いずれ売るつもりで買ったそうですが
時期を逸してしまい、
大損したそうです。
幸い会社を倒産させるまでには到らなかった
そうですが、まだまだ借金に追われていて
心配の種は尽きないようです。
「本職の不動産を地道にやっていたら
こんな苦労はしなかったのに。
銀行から金を借りすぎたんや」
今は、賃貸マンションの仲介を中心に
細々と商売を続けておられます。
社員もかつては１０数人いたそうですが、
今は奥さんだけです。
人生には調子の良い時も
悪い時もあると思いますが
どん底に落ちた時、
もし、這い上がる方法があるとすれば
「本家がえり」
とこの社長さんはおっしゃいました。
「元々やっていた事をやり直したり
思い出せば何とかなる」
この言葉には、伊達にこの世界で
３０年食ってきたわけじゃない、
そんな生命力がにじみ出ていました。
　

★　世界共通語
　
日本国内でも、多くの外国人が
見かけられるようになりました。
ホテルなどで展示会が開かれると
何人かに一人は英語での話になります。
私は英語を勉強中ですので、
通訳の方に間に入ってもらいます。
その時、気がついたことです。
仕事の話のときは、何とかなるんですが
それ以外の雑談になったときに
海外から来られた方は、文化の話をします。
「奈良の大仏」くらいなら何とかなるのですが
「この辺りに「歌麿」「写楽」を見れる美術館
はありませんか」
なんて聞かれると、
「さて、どこにあったかな」
ってことになり、ガイドブックを見たり
美術館に電話したり、もう大変です。
通訳の人も言っていましたが
海外に留学して一番困ったのは
話のネタだそうです。
日本から来たと言うと
アメリカでは好奇心で見られ
いろいろ聞かれるそうです。
特に多いのは、文化の話です。
海外では、パーティなどで
話題になるのは１番は文化的な話です。
芸術や文学、ヨーロッパに行けば
オペラの話など出てきます。
日本ならば
歌舞伎や仏像の話をしてあげると
外国人は、
「ニッポン」
を実感するそうです。
日本人がニューヨークに行けば
自由の女神を見に行ったり、
中国に行けば万里の長城を見に行くのと
同じです。まして、少し親しく
なったりすると、いろいろ話題が必要です。
たとえば、日本人の多くは、立食パーティでは
食べるだけの人になっていると言われます。
それは話のネタがないからです。
時々、日本に住んでいるのに
何にも日本のことを知らない自分が
恥ずかしくなります。
今、英語を学ぶ人は年々増えています。
話せる人も年々増えています。
でも、英語で話すネタになる文化を
勉強している人は非常に少ないのです。
文化は世界共通語です。

★　チョットした心づかい
　
学生時代のアルバイトで
電車の社内販売をやったことがあります。
アルバイトも一ヶ月を過ぎると
気の合う仲間ができてきます。
ある日、
「誰の売上が一番多かったか」
が話題になりました。
みんな同じ東京と大阪を往復する区間なのに
一人だけ、いつも１・５倍の売上を上げている
女の子がいました。
販売する時間は、ほとんどマニュアルで
決まっていましたし、商品はすべて同じです。
「僕は、真面目に決まった時間に車内に
出ているのに」
ちょっと、悔しくなってどうして何だろう。
「やっぱり男より女の方が、客受けが良いのか」
とも思いましたが、他の女の子は大して
私と変わりませんでした。
電車に乗る時間も考えました。
男子アルバイトは、早朝とか夜間が多いからです。
でも、私の１ヶ月のバイト経験からいけば、
朝はサンドイッチやコーヒーが売れるし
夜はビールやつまみ、それに弁当も
売れます。昼間の専門の女の子に負けるなんて
理解できませんでした。
本人にも聞いてみました。でも、
「わからない」
と首をかしげるだけです。
話してみて分かったのですが、
彼女は、どっちらかと言えば
何をするにもスローです。
他の仕事なら、勤まらないかもしれません。
いっしょに歩いても、ゆっくりなんです。
「車内販売の時も、そんなにゆっくり歩くの」
すると彼女は、首を振って
「もっと、ゆっくり歩いてる。
その方がお客さん注文しやすいでしょ」
とトロリトロリと話すのです。
この時、私は頭をガツンとぶん殴られたと思いました。

私は、次から次へと言ってくる
お客さんの注文を要領良くこなす事ばかり
考えていたのです。
彼女はゆっくり歩いた方が
お客さんが注文しやすいことを
分かっていたのです。
この経験は、次の夏、高校野球の
スタジアムで売り子をやった時に
役立ちました。大きな声とゆっくり歩き、
たくさんビールと氷を売ることができました。
１０年以上過ぎた今でも、
仕事だけでなく、いろんな場面で
この経験は生きています。
今はスピードの時代ですが、
早い要領がいいだけでは
上手く行きません。
ゆっくりでも、チョットした
心づかいが、大きな差を生みます。
人の気持ちを考えれば
まだまだ良いアイデアが生まれるはずです。
