お盆前の暑い夏の日だった。
普段はＴ社の部長をやっている健司には
もう一つの仕事がある。数年前、冗談の
つもりで書いた本が売れてから、雑誌や
新聞に雑文を書いている。そして、週末は
地方で講演もしている。今回の講演は
どういうわけか生まれ故郷の大阪の某市だ。
夕方駅に着くと、地元の商工会の偉い人たちが
出迎えてくれた。駅前のホテルの一室を
とってくれたようで、向井という副会長に
案内された
「あしたは、よろしくお願いします。
１時間となってますが３０分くらい延長
していただければヘッヘッヘうれしいんですが」
とスケベそうな笑いを浮かべた帰って行った。
「ここからは、ママの所へは行けへんし、
本物のお母ちゃんに電話してと」
健司が実家に電話すると母が出た

商工会の前におまえの名前と同じ人の

健司はラーメンライスが好きで、とくに

母は頭がいいのか悪いのか分からない人で
時々ビックリするような事を知っている。
一方、父は昔から小心で今は少しぼけている。
「やれやれ、明日も早いし風呂入って寝るか」
と健司が風呂に入ろうとすると
ピンポンと呼び鈴が鳴った。
「誰やろ」
健司がドアを開けると若い女の子が立っていた。
黄色いワンピースを着て、肩までの髪を少し茶色に
染めた２０前後のかわいい女の子だった。
「部屋の間違いやね」
と健司がドアを閉めようとすると
「向井さんって知ってますよね」
「はあ、商工会の？」
「じゃ、間違いないです。２時間ほどお相手するように
と言われてきました」
と言うと女の子は部屋の中へ入ってきた。
おそらく、向井が余計な気を使ったんだと健司は思った。
人目につくと困るので、とにかく中に入れることにした。
ドアを閉めると彼女はボタンをはずし始めた。
「ちょっと、待ちなさい。俺にも心の準備というものがある」

「向井さんに何て言われたか知らへんけど、

と言うわけで、いろいろ話を聞いていると彼女は恵美と言う名前で
今年の春に短大を卒業したが、就職が決まらず
知人のスナックでバイトをしていたらしい。
その店の常連が向井で

と何を勘違いしたのか必死で頼んだらしい。
たまたま、彼氏と別れた所で、モンモンとしていた
恵美はハワイにでも気晴らしに出かけるつもりで
軽く引き受けたらしい。

たまたま総務の女の子が一人、結婚退職するらしく
欠員補充という形で恵美は健司と同じ会社で働くことになった。
数日後、

と電話をもらってから特に変わったこともなく
時々、会社で顔を合わすこともあるにはあるが、
他の社員と同じように真面目にやってるようだし
夏の夜の一件のことを、すっかり忘れていた健司だった。
が、半年後、こんどは恵美から熱烈なラブレターをもらって
健司は頭を悩ますことになる・・・

スポーツが大好きで、どこにでもいるような
活発な男の子だった村本君は
中学１年の時、のちに彼の奥さんになる景子さん
と同じクラスになりました。
景子さんは、とても勉強のできる子で
スポーツも抜群、その上、学級委員としてクラスの中では
誰もが認めるリーダーでした。
実は、村本君もいっしょに学級委員だったのですが、
彼が何かをやろうとしても
いつも景子さんが先へ先へ進めてしまうのです。
村本君は、絵に描いた餅のような

そんな村本君が、ある日を境に景子さんの
一生の親友に変わっていきます。

クラス全員で笛を吹くことがありました。
たまたま景子さんの隣に座っていた村本君は、
彼女が悔しそうに涙を堪えているに気づきました。
景子さんは笛を手に持っていましたが

で来ている山下部長にも、大阪に戻るようにとの辞令が来た。

このプロジェクトのために作られた事務所に

日も暮れかかった頃、早苗と山下は運河沿いにある倉庫を改造した
洒落たレストランに入った。レトロな雰囲気が魅力の店だ。

「嫁さんと子供に囲まれる生活に戻るわけや」
