英検1級単語 premonitionとrenunciationについて（トピック：①慣用句「虫の知らせ」を英語で説明?②戦争放棄って何て言う?）
極力日本に関する例文を新聞やニュースサイトから引っ張ってきて、一見難しい（とっつきにくい）単語の暗記（印象付け）に役立てたいと思います。

①premonition
見た目から感じること→pre + monition→前もって＋　警告、モニター、監視する
英英辞書→a strong feeling that something is about to happen, typically something unpleasant
例文
"Mushi no shirase" can be literally translated as "a notice from insects," and refers to a premonition or hunch.

「虫の知らせ」という言葉は、直訳すると、「虫からの知らせ」という意味で、「予感」や「直感」を意味します。
→日本の慣用句・ことわざについて英語で説明がされていて興味深いですね。

②renunciation
英英辞書→the formal rejection of something, typically a belief, claim or course of action.

例文
・Eastern Europe’s renunciation of Communism
→東欧の共産主義放棄

・Renunciation of Armed Forces
→軍隊の放棄

・Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution contains “No war” clause. It came into effect on May 3, 1947, immediately after World War II. The text of the article of the Japanese Government formally renounces war as a right of sovereignty and refuses to settle disputes using military force.
→日本国憲法第9条には「不戦条項」がある。第二次世界大戦直後の1947年5月3日に施行された。この条文では、日本政府は、主権在民の権利としての戦争を正式に放棄し、武力による紛争解決を拒否している。

（気になる単語）
※article→(a separate clause or paragraph of a legal document)条項、第◯条〜※法的文書の個別の条項または段落
clause = a particular and separate article, stipulation in a treaty bill or contract (条約案や契約における特定の個別条項、規定)
→article のなかに clauseがある、という理解です

※renounce「放棄する(formally declare one’s abandonment of a claim, request or possession)」という単語が使われていますね、これはrenunciationの元の動詞の形ですね。単に止める、という感じではなく、より強く、正式に、確固たる態度で、絶対に「止める」「放棄する」という言葉の強いイメージが伝わってきます。確かに、日本国憲法には「戦争の放棄」が記されていますね。
※sovereignty→主権：supreme power or authority
dispute→紛争・争い：an argument or disagreement between people or groups
