*This is a record of an event held at Nakamura Gakuen Girls' High School in September 2017.
9月最初の週末。アメリカ留学時代の親友が仕事で日本に来るということで福岡まで会いに行ったら、全く予想外に、素晴らしい国際交流の場に関わらせてもらえた。
とても貴重な経験だったので、忘れないうちに書いておこうと思う。だらだらと長くなってしまったらすんません！ 国際交流や教育に興味のある方は、よかったら読んでみてね♪

In the first weekend of September, I visited Fukuoka to see one of my best friends of my student life in the U.S.A., who was coming to Fukuoka on a business trip.
I had an amazingly great experience there, so that I write this note here, for my memory. Please forgive me if it becomes very long. But it is impossible for me to make it short , because that was a very great and rich experience.
If you are interested in “International Exchanges” or “Education”, please read it! Even if you find many grammatical errors in my note, just smile and forget them away!

<01> Louからのメッセージ A message from Lou
25年前にアメリカに留学していたときのアメリカ人の親友LouからFBメッセージが入った。なんと8月末に日本に来るという。Louはいま地元カリフォルニアのCorningという小さな街の高校で教師をしていて、自分の生徒たちが、福岡にある中村学園女子高校という学校が主催するカンファレンスに参加するとかで、そのアテンドで来るという！
せっかくなので福岡に行くことを計画する。 「金曜日は子供たちのカンファレンスの最終日で、土曜日の午前中は観光の予定。その後自由な時間がある筈だから、土曜日に来れたら是非」 とLouは言う。 だけど、日本とアメリカの高校生たちが集まって開くカンファレンスが、どういうものなのか詳細は全く分からないながらも、なんだかそれに興味が湧いてきて、 「金曜日に行けたら行くから、可能だったらカンファレンスってヤツを見学させてほしい」 と送ると、 「きっと大丈夫。ぜひ生徒たちのカンファレンスを一緒に見よう！」 と返信が来る。
Received a FB message from Lou, one of my best friends when I was studying in the U.S.A.. He said that he was coming to Japan at the end of August. He is now teaching at a high school in a small city named Corning in California where he is from. His students were visiting Nakamura Gakuen Girls’ High School in Fukuoka to attend a conference there, and Lou was coming with them.
Planned to visit Fukuoka to see him. Lou said “Why don’t you come there on Saturday, because we finish the conference on Friday, so that we can have much time.” However, even I did not know what kind of conference it would be, but I was pretty curious about the conference of Japanese and American students. I said, “ I will try to visit there on Friday, please let me observe your students’ conference!”, and Lou replied, “It must be Okay, let’s observe it together!”
<02> カンファレンスの会場へ Get to the place
幸い仕事も調整できて金曜日休みをもらい、貯まってたマイレージを使い福岡に向かった。 その朝Louから送られてきたメッセージでは、会場は中村学園ではなくて、なんと福岡国際会議場であるという。
ちょっと驚いた。 国際会議場みたいな立派な施設で、会議室でも借りてやるのか。予想外である。 昼過ぎに着いてみて更に驚いた。 会場は、福岡国際会議場の会議室ではなくて、千人くらい入るようなメインホールであったのだ！ しかも「FOOD SUMMIT（食のサミット） 2017」と名打たれている。
「FOOD SUMMIT…? そんな大そうなイベントやったんか！」 メインホールの入り口のところで少し待っていると、しばらくしてたくさんの制服姿の女子高生たちがやってきた。すごい数だ。 程なくしてLouも現れる。留学から帰って就職したあと、L.A.に短期赴任したときに会っていたから、約20年ぶりである。握手してハグして、 「なんかえらい大そうなイベントみたいやけど、全然そんなの想像してなかったぞ」 と言うと、 「俺もそうだよ！」 という。
「カンファレンスのディレクターに相談したら、彼女が俺の隣の席をお前に用意してくれたから、一緒にカンファレンスを見学できるぞ！」 続けて自慢気な顔でそう言った。 それは素晴らしい！ いちおう覚悟はしていたけど、全く知らない女子高のイベントに来て、Louと離れて一人で見学するのはちょっと孤独だと思っていたところに、Louと一緒に生徒たちのカンファレンスを見れるのはありがたい。
近くにそのディレクターの方がいたので、Louが紹介してくれて挨拶した。若い女性であった。 簡単に経緯を話して、20年ぶりにLouに会いたくて福岡に来たけど、そのカンファレンスというものに興味があったのでお願いした、受け入れて頂いてありがとうございます、と。 にこやかに対応して頂いたが、アメリカから招聘した高校の教師が、なぜか日本人の友達を呼んできたことに、恐らく驚いていたんだろうとは思うけど、断るわけにもいかない、というところだったのかも知れない。 でもとにかく、快く受け入れて頂いて、ほんとうにありがたい。席まで調整してくれて。
そのメインホールの中央前から3列目に俺たちの席を作ってくれていた。その席から前3列は、カンファレンス参加者と引率の教師たちのための席であった。 そして、ものすごく驚いたことに、アメリカのLouたちの高校だけでなく、マレーシア、ウズベキスタン、韓国からも高校生たちが参加しているというではないか！ Louの高校からの参加者は、女子2人と男子1人の3人であった。 各高校から3～4人の生徒でチームを作り、ホストである中村学園女子高校からは2チームがエントリーしているという。
I took a day off on that Friday, and flew to Fukuoka. A message from Lou said that the conference was going to be held at “Fukuoka International Convention Center”, not at Nakamura Gakuen Girls’ High School.
I arrived at the convention center, and I was so surprised to find it was held at “the Main Hall”, and named “FOOD SUMMIT 2017”.
Many high school students were arriving there, and soon I found Lou. We shaked hands and hugged each other for the second time since I left my school in Colorado,
“I asked the director at Nakamura Gakuen, and she arranged your sheet next to me!”, Lou told me ploudly. That is great!
Lou introduced me to the director, who was a young woman, and I expressed my gratitude for her accepting me and arranging a sheet for me. She must be surprised to hear that a teacher from the U.S.A. was inviting his Japanese friend to this conference... Anyway, happily we had good sheets together at the Main Hall.
There I found that students from 4 foreign countries were attending this conference. U.S.A.. Malaysia, Uzbekistan and Korea. Lou told me that one team from each country were attending this conference, and two teams from Nakamura Gakuen Girls’ High School.

<03> 「食のサミット2017」 ”Food Summit 2017"
開会式が始まった。 中村学園の生徒がひとりずつ各国の国旗と国名を記したプラカードを持ってチームを先導する。なんと「各国代表だ」と紹介されている。しかも「ファイナル・コンペティション」だとか言っているではないか！
各国で予選が行われていたというのか！ Louに聞いたら、確かに事前に彼らの高校で数チームで予選をして、各チームがプレゼンテーションビデオ作成して競い、それに勝ち残ったチームが今回来ているという。各国の高校で同じことをして、勝ち残ったチームが集まっているのだ。確かに「決勝」である。 これは結構マジである。 審査委員数人が紹介される。地元企業や教育関係機関の方たちだ。審査委員長は国連関係機関の方らしい。 教頭先生による開会宣言が高らかになされて、「FOOD SUMMIT 2017」は始まった。
At the opening ceremony, lead by placard girls, 6 teams walked onto the stage. The M.C. students were explaining in English and Japanese, that they were the representatives from each countries, and today we were to have the “Final Competition”.
I asked Lou and he answered that they had a “Pre-competition” at each school beforehand competing with video presentations, and the winners of the Pre-competitions were on the stage today.
What an event! A head teacher annouced the opening of the Summit.
"An opening ceremony"_ 6 groups from 5 countries are walking up to the stage. What kind of event they are going to have??
<04> PART 1＿ 「プレゼンテーション」＿”Presentations”
全体は三部構成になっていて、第一部は「プレゼンテーション・コンペティション」であるという。 予選で勝ち上がってきた6チームが、口頭によるプレゼンテーションと、予選時の映像をさらに磨いたビデオの上映を行っていく。
The FOOD SUMMIT was of 3 parts. The first part was “Presentation Competition”.
【1】最初のチームは、アメリカ代表であるLouたちの高校。 チーム名はR.E.A.C.H.。 REACHは「Resourceful Environmental and Agricultural Connection of Humans」の頭文字らしい。地域における農業や環境問題、職業機会などを絡めたかなり具体的な食糧問題改善策を提示していて驚く。あと、VIDEOの構成や写真もなかなか大したもんだ。高校生が自分たちで作ったらしい。今どきの高校生ってこんなもんか？
First team was U.S. team, named R.E.A.C.H.. R.E.A.C.H. stand for “Resourceful Environmental and Agricultural Connection of Humans”. I was amazed to see that they presented a very actual plan to solve a Food Problem in a comunity, including agricultural, environmental or Job opportunity problems. Moreover, they made the video very well. I liked the structure and photos there.
【2】日本チーム① 「食糧廃棄をなくそう！」がテーマ。3人のメンバーが、ショートコント的な寸劇で食糧廃棄問題を再現しているところが、面白く、且つ分かりやすい説明になっていると思う。観衆にもウケていた。
Japan Team 1: Their theme was “Discontinue Food Wastes”. Their skits on the video to explain their solution plan for Food Wastes were very funny and effective, whole audience looked like they were enjoying it.
【3】ウズベキスタンチーム。このチームだけ男子2人、女子1人の混成チーム。女子は日本人っぽい風貌をしている。ウズベキスタンは旧ソ連から独立した国だけど、位置的には「中央アジア」であり、人種や文化的には様々な混交があるところなんだろう。「The Other Side of the Stomach ～How we treat food～」をテーマに、「Food Waste（食のムダ）」と「食糧不足」の矛盾について考察し、その解決策を提案していた。
Uzbekistan Team: It was the only one team of boys and a girl. The girl looked like Japanese. Uzbekistan is a country which became independent from the former U.S.S.R., but it is a country in Central Asia, and they must have many cultures and ethnic groups there. Their theme was “The Other Side of the Stomach, ~How we treat food~”, and they showed their study about a contradiction between “Food Wastes” and “Food Shortage”, and presented their solution plan. It was unbelievable to know this presentation was made by high school students...
【4】マレーシアチーム。 彼らは唯一4人で構成。一人がマイクを通して彼らのリサイクル策の説明を行い、残りの3人がステージ中央で「イカインクペン」や「卵の殻を使ったリサイクルチョーク」の作り方をデモンストレーションするスタイルが特徴的。
Malaysian Team: They consisted of 4 students. One explained their Recycle Plan, and other 3 were at the center of the stage to demonstrate how to make “Squid Ink Pens”, and “Recycling Chalk from Eggshells”. That presentation was very effective and their solution plan was really practical.
【5】韓国チーム。韓国にあるインターナショナルスクールのようだ。今回3人のうち2人は日本人だという。 「Globalization and Traditional Food」をテーマに、韓国で日本食を広めていく具体的な施策を提案していた。彼女らなりに韓国での日本の文化の紹介を通じて両国の交流を深めていくことに貢献しようとしているのではないかと想像する。素晴らしい。
Korean Team: They were from an International High School in Korea. 2 of 3 in this team were Japanese. Their theme was “Globalization and Traditional Food”, and presented their plan to spread Japanese traditional foods in Korea. They might be making some efforts to raise cultural exchanges between two countries. That is worth to be respected.
【6】日本チーム②。 「世界にはばたけ日本食！」がテーマ。「日本国内での日本食消費が減っている」というDATAから始まり、Louが「ほんとうに？」と驚いている。プレゼンテーションの掴みとして効いているようだ。そしてこのチームは、3人のメンバーが交代にスクリーンの前を行ったり来たりしながら、身振り手振りを加えてプレゼンしている。TEDのプレゼンを意識しているんだろう。緊張で表情や動きが強張っている様子が、カワイイ。
Japan Team 2: Their theme was “Take off to the world, Japanese food”. They started with the data which shows “Japanese Food Consumption in Japan is decreasing”, and it amazed Lou to ask “Is that true, Hisashi?” It was a very effective way to grab audience’s heart at the beginning. Moreover, they presented walking to right and left on the stage, pointing the items on the screen. They must be trying to act like presenters in TED, but they were a little bit nervous and their action looked cute.
6つのチームのプレゼンテーションが終わると、観客たちから投票用紙が回収される。俺たちのところには投票用紙は無かった。Lou曰く、「どうせ自分の高校に入れるだろうから。それはフェアではないし。」とのこと。確かにそうかも。
After the presentations of 6 teams, they collected ballots, voting paper, from the audience. We had no ballots. Lou said, “Obviously, we teachers vote to our own students. It’s not fair, is it?” Makes sense.
＜05＞ 休憩と新体操実演 ~An Interval and A Performance by Rhythmic Gymnastics Club
プレゼンテーションの後、休憩と新体操部の実演があった。中村学園女子高校・中学の新体操部は全国大会レベルらしく、立派なパフォーマンスが披露される。
休憩時間には、Louの同僚先生のCindyのところに中村学園の生徒たちが次から次へとやって来ては、嬉しそうにいろいろ話しかけている。聞いてみたら、中村学園女子高は毎年Corningの高校に短期留学で生徒を送り込んでいるらしく、どうやらその生徒たちの面倒見役をCindyがやっていたそうなのだ。久しぶりにCindyに会えて生徒は嬉しそうで、Cindyも嬉しそうだった。
After the “Presentation Competition”, we had an interval time and a Performance by Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. Nakamura Gakuen’s Rhythmic Gymnastics Club has a national competition level and their performance was really impressive.
During an interval time, many Japanese students came to Cindy, another teacher of American team, one after one, saying hi happily to her. Cindy told me that Nakamura Gakuen Girls’ High School sends some students every year to the high school in Corning. And Cindy was the one to take care of those students there. Students looked so happy to meet Cindy again, and so was Cindy.
<06> PART 2 _「パネル・ディスカッション」＿”Panel Discussion”
休憩を挟んで、第二部はパネルディスカッション。 各チームから更に代表一人が出て、パネルディスカッションが行われる。 テーマは、「グローバリゼーション」であった。
「2000年にあなたは何をしていましたか？」という問いから始まった。ファシリテーターを務めるのは先ほどの女性ディレクターだ。彼女が会場の観衆に聞くと、半分くらいは2000年に生まれていなかった。中村学園女子高校の２年生と3年生が会場に来ているというので、ちょうど17歳と18歳くらいなのだ！ だいたいからして、俺とLouがコロラドで出くわして毎日一緒に遊んでいたのが1991～92。2000年と言えば二人とも大学を卒業してバリバリ働き始めていた頃だ。
「あなたにとって、グローバリゼーションとは？」という質問もあった。 日本の高校生が、「グローバリゼーションにはいい面も悪い面もあるから、私たちは慎重にならなければならない」と言う。高校生でそこまえ考えていることに感心する。俺が高校生の時はもっと能天気だったはずだ。
ウズベキスタンの高校生は「Friendship」だという。これにも激しく同意する。グローバルに交流すれば、自ずと様々な文化や価値観と触れることになる。そうすれば当然、摩擦や価値対立が発生する筈だ。でも本当に大切な「グローバリゼーション」とは、それらの価値基準をひとつに統一することではなくて、お互いに敬意をもって違う価値基準を尊重することである筈だ。 これもまた高校生から聞く意見として驚きであり、喜びである。
なかなか興味深く、どこまででも掘り下げていけるようなディスカッションであったが、ディレクターの女性がうまくオーガナイズしてきれいにまとまった。
2nd part of the Summit was a “Pannel Discussion”. Theme was “Globalization”.
It was started with a question, “What were you doing in 2000”, asked by the female director as a facilitator. Lou and I were amazed to know about 50 % of audience were not born in 2000! The year when Lou and I were having fun in Colorado was 1991 - 1992. In the year 2000, both of us started working already...
Another question was, “ What does globalization mean to you?” One Japanese student answered, “There are both good points and bad points in globalism, we have to be careful about it.” I admired her to think deeply about world issues even though she was a high school student.
One Uzbekistan student answered “Friendship”. I strongly agree with him. Whenever we exchange globally, we come across other cultures or value scales which are very different from ours. That might cause frictions or conflicts. However, the most important “Globalization” is not to have a unified value scale on this planet, but to respect each others’ value scale. I was amazed and happy to hear such a opinion from a student.
It was very interesting and worth talking a lot, but the director organized it well and concluded the discussion.

<07> PART 3＿ 「共同宣言」＿”Joint Statement”
なんと、第三部は共同宣言の採択だという。
ステージ奥のスクリーンに映像が映し出される。昨日一日、各国代表の生徒たちが、一緒になって今回のFOOD SUMMITの共同宣言をまとめるべく、議論を重ねている様子だ。 さらにそのスクリーンの前では、その代表の生徒たちが、テーブルを囲んで行ったり来たりしながら、なにか議論を続けている。 その間15分くらいか。 彼らは、昨日一日議論して大方作った共同宣言の最後の部分を、今まさにSummit最終日のステージ上で、皆であーだこーだ言って完成させていたのだ！
I was once again amazed to hear that the 3rd part of the Summit was “Joint Statement”.
They projected a video of students working together to make “Joint Statement” of this Summit. It was videotaped yesterday. And now, in front of the screen, students are working together to finish the final part of the statement.

ついにそれがまとまって、今回のFOOD SUMMITの「共同宣言」として発表される。 しかもその共同宣言は、当サミットの審査委員長である国連関連組織のスタッフの方に託される。 サミットとして共同宣言を作ることまで織り込まれているとは！ しかも開催期間中に皆で協議して作り、そして最終日にそれを完成させ、それを国連に手渡すとは！ ここまで構成されているとは、ほんとうに驚きである。
They talked a lot there for about 15 minutes, and finally they finished it. Two representatives of students read the “Joint Statement” in Japanese and English, and handed it to the main judge from a U.N. organization.
Their Joint Statement consisted of these actual plans.
<08> 閉会式＿”Closing Ceremony”
最後に閉会式。まずは「Presentation Competition」の審査結果が発表される。優勝はイカインクペンなどの具体的な対処案をプレゼンしたマレーシアチーム。表彰するときには国旗と校旗を広げて、ほんとうに何かの国際大会みたいである。
審査委員長が「順位を付けることが目的ではなく、それぞれが素晴らしかった。こういうことを皆が意識を持って考え、そして他者の意見に耳を傾けていくことが大切だ」というようなことを総評としてコメントしていた。本当に素晴らしいことである。ここに登壇した生徒たちだけでなく、各国の学校で予選に参加した生徒たちも含めて、本当に素晴らしい教育機会を作っていると思う。
At the Closing Ceremony, they announced the winner of “Presentation Competition”. It was Malaysian team which presented their original and plactical idea for Recycling.
The main judge said, “To decide No.1 was not our main purpose, all the psentations were excellent. Our main purpose was, for all attendants to have opportunities to think deeply about such an international issue and listen respectfully to others’ opinions.” That is a really great stance. Not only these students on the stage, but also students who participated in the Pre-competitions had same great learning opportunities from this event.
<09> Lou と晩飯 Dinner with Lou
サミットが終わると、生徒たちは一度学校に戻るとのことだったが、Louは離団を許され、俺と二人でホテルに向かった。
幸いLouたちと同じ福岡駅前のホテルに予約が取れていたので、チェックインしてふたりで中州まで繰り出す。 モツ鍋屋に入り、昔話に花を咲かせる。 店を変えて1時まで。5時から飲み始めたから計８時間。コロラドでの友達の近況やら昔話やら、冬休みにカリフォルニアのLouの実家に滞在させてもらった時の話や、その時の友達の近況やら。
Louはいま教師をしているので、教育や社会についても話す。 俺の関わったミャンマーの映像を見せて、教育や国際協力の大切さについても話す。
どんだけ話しても話が尽きないのは、やっぱりたまたま巡り合って友達になったからだけではなくて、俺とLouの考え方がある部分とても近く、価値観のようなものを共有しているからだと思う。 大学生の時にアメリカに留学させてもらって、そしてLouをはじめたくさんの友達と出会い貴重な時間を過ごし、さらに今でも関係が続いていることをとてもありがたく思う。 お陰で今日のような素晴らしい場を見せてもらうことができたし。
After the Summit, Lou got allowed to leave the band, we went to a flourish area in Fukuoka to enjoy dinner.
We got into a “Motsuyaki (roast giblets) Reataurant”, and enjoyed them, and talked and talked from 5 o’clock till 1 o’clock in the morning. About our friends and memories in Colorado, and memories of the Christmas holidays I spent at Lou’s home in Alamo, California.
I showed a movie of “An Agricultural Assistance Project” in Myanmar which I produced, and we talked about the importance of “education” and “International cooperarions”.
We couldn’t run out of the topics to talk about, maybe not because we were just a nomal friends but very close friends to share a same value scale and a stance on international affairs. This experience in Fukuoka, and conversation with Lou reminded me of our student life in Colorado and I was so grateful to my parents who allowed me to study in Colorado at that time. And also Lou and other great friends who shared a wonderful life and friendship there.
<10> 食朝_Breakfast with American students
朝8時にホテルで朝食。LouとCindyと3人の生徒たちと。1時間ほどゆっくりと話しながら。
昨晩、生徒3人は、日本人の生徒たち数人とウズベキスタンの3人と、海岸に行って花火を始めたら警察に怒られたとコーフンしながら話している！ 「International Criminalだ！」というとキャーキャー言っている。 生徒たち同士で、教室やサミットの外でも楽しんでいるようで素晴らしい。
Had breakfst at a restaurant in the hotel, with Lou, Cindy and their students, for about an hour eating and talking.
They told us the story of last night, 3 American students and 3 Uzbekistan students and some Japanese students went to a beach to enjoy fireworks, but right after they started it, policemen came to them and told them to stop it. “Oh, that’s an international crimainal!”, I said, and it made them scream. Lou, Cindy and I were happy to hear that students were having fun together also out of school.
<11> 観光ツアーへ To a Sightseeing Tour
土曜日は、海外からの生徒・教員たちと、日本の登壇者を含む何人かの生徒と先生で、バスに乗って半日観光をすると聞いていた。 Louと一緒にディレクターの女性と、もう一人の男性の先生に、俺も同行させてもらっていいか恐る恐る聞いてみる。もし席が空いていれば…、と。 先生たちは笑顔で受け入れてくれた。 「アメリカチームの先生が、なぜかサミットに日本人の友人を呼んできて、同じホテルに泊まり、そして観光ツアーにも同乗してくる」とは、全く想像していなかったであろう。 でも受け入れて頂いた。本当にありがたい。
市内観光出発の時には、中村学園女子高校の校長先生も見送りに来ていて、Louと一緒に挨拶した。経緯を話すと「学生の時からの友達なんですか、それは素晴らしい。ぜひ一緒に生徒たちと観光にご参加ください。子供たちにもいろんなことを教えてあげて下さい。」と快諾して頂く。予想以上に前向きな返事を頂き驚く。学校全体がこのように懐深く前向きなんだろうか。教育の場として素晴らしいことやと思う。
最初に向かったのは大濠公園。 みんなでぞろくたとお堀の周りを歩く。 韓国チームの生徒たちは、残念ながら別の地域で予定があるらしく朝福岡を発ってしまったが、アメリカ・マレーシア・ウズベキスタン・日本の生徒たちは、昨日までのサミットでの協働作業でかなり打ち解けたみたいで、ワイワイ言いながら練り歩き、どこかで誰かがスマホを構えては記念撮影に興じている。 日本庭園について、しばらく自由時間。 生徒たちは、思い思いに散らばって池の周りを散策したり、やはり写真を撮りまくったりしている。
俺は、ウズベキスタンチームの2人の男子生徒と話したりした。彼らは好奇心旺盛のようで、日本の社会システムや文化や習慣についていろいろ質問をしてくるのでそれに答えるのがタイヘンなくらいだった。
マレーシアチームの数人の女性先生たちと話した。ほんの少ししか話さなかったけど、彼女たちはとてもフレンドリーで楽しく話をできた。 あと、池の周りで何人かの生徒たちの写真を撮ってあげたり。
I knew that they were going to have a sightseeing tour on Saturday. Lou and I talked to the director and another Japanese teacher to ask if it was possible for me to join them. They said Okay! We were so happy to hear that from such generous teachers.
Just before starting the tour, there came the principal of Nakamura Gakuen Girls’ High School. Lou and I talked to him, to thank for accepting me to the tour. He said, “Oh, you two have been friends since student days! That is great. Please join our tour, and tell many stories of your friendship to our students.” We were amazed and happy to hear that, and to know this school was so generous and open-minded to give chances to students to learn a lot.
First, we visited “Ohori Koen”, a park of Big Moat, there we walked by the “moat”. Unfortunately, students from Korea left Fukuoka this morning, but all students were very close friends now, walking, chattering, taking a photo every other minutes.
We had a short free time at a Japanese Garden. They spread to the places and had fun and took pictures.
I talked with two Uzbekistan boys there, they were very curious about many things and gave me so many questions about Japanese society and culture and so on. It was quite tough for me to answer to these questions, but it was a great fun to talk with them.
I talked with Malaysian teachers too. It was not a long time but I found that they were very friendly. At the end of our free time there, I took some photos of students by a pond.
<12> SGコース_SG Course
バスで移動中、隣の席に日本人の生徒がいたので、学校についていろいろ聞いてみた。
今回のFOOD SUMMITは、中村学園女子高校の中の「SGコース」の生徒が参加するイベントであり、生徒たちはカリキュラムの中でこのイベントに向けてずっと準備を続けてきたのだという。 「SGコース」の「SG」は「Super Global」。今の３年生が「SGコース」一期生。彼らが３年生になった今年、第一回目のFOOD SUMMITが開催されたということである。
なるほど！ 「SGコース」では、外国語を学ぶだけでなく、グローバルなことをいろいろ学び、さまざまな国際経験を積ませる。海外短期留学も希望者には行う。そして「SGコース」の集大成として（たぶん）FOOD SUMMITを開催したということだ。 なんて具体的で身になりそうな教育機会なのだろうか。 生徒たちも準備等々にタイヘンだろうが、その一つ一つがリアルな学習機会である。 何よりも、教師や学校側の準備・運営がモーレツにタイヘンに違いないと思う。 ４カ国から数人ずつの生徒・教師を招いて、宿泊させ、数日間の大きなイベントを開催するとは。
そんなカリキュラムを実施している学校のことは聞いたことがない。国内でも稀有な例なんじゃないだろうか？ ２年生から専門コースが始まるらしいんだけど、「SGコース」一期生の時は希望者が定員に達しなかったらしい。しかし２年目・３年目と希望者が定員を超えているという。恐らくは一期生の日々の勉強内容や、国際的な交流ぶりやそれらを楽しみながら学習している様子などを伝え聞いて、後輩たちも「SGコース」を希望したのではないだろうか？ 今の３年生たちが卒業して大学生になりやがては社会人になり、この学校で受けた素晴らしい国際的教育の成果を各所で活かしそのことが徐々に世に知れるようになると、「SGコース」の希望者は更に増えていくに違いないと思う。「SGコース」に進みたくて中村学園女子高校に進学を希望する子も出て来る筈だ。もしかすると「SGコース」のクラス数を増やさなきゃいけなくなるんじゃないだろうか？ 先生や職員さんたちは更にタイヘンになるのではないかと思うけど、日本の未来を担う若者たちの教育のために、更に頑張って頂きたいと思う。
In the bus heading to the next place, one Japanese student was sitting next to me, and I asked her about their school. She explained about it to me.
“FOOD SUMMIT” is an event by the students at “S.G. course”, and they had been preparing for it for many months. “S.G.” means “Super Global”, and seniors this year are the first generation of “S.G. course”. They held “FOOD SUMMIT” for the first time in “S.G. course” history, this year.
What a curriculum! At “S.G. course”, not only teaching foreign languages, they teach a lot about international issues and foreign affairs. Let students have chance to study abroad for weeks. And let students experience to hold “FOOD SUMMIT” as the biggest event in “S.G. course”!
What a practical and useful learning opportunity! Student must have experienced many difficulties during their preparations, but each experience is a real learning.
I was so impressed to know their curriculum, but at the same time, I could imagine that teachers and staff must be very busy for preparing for their great curriculum.
<13> キャナルシティでの自由時間 Free time at ”Canal City"
大濠公園の後は、キャナルシティへ。ここで2時間半ほどの自由時間とのこと。
生徒たちは数人ずつのグループに分かれて、キャナルシティのあちこちに散っていった。字自由時間は2時間半もあるから、キャナルシティの中でお昼を食べたり買い物したり、近隣に観光に出たりするんだろう。
先生たちは一緒に食事をしましょう、ということになった。 「何にしましょうか？」と日本の先生二人が相談するが、マレーシアの数人はムスリムなのでハラルのレストランでないと、という。確かに！ しかし福岡にもハラルの店があるとは驚きだ。先生チームだけで10人ちょいいるから、土曜のランチ時に一団で動くのもタイヘンなので、2チームに分かれることに。ハラルレストランにも興味があったが、俺とLouとCindyは、日本の男先生と在福のアメリカ人英語教師と一緒にキャナルシティ内のラーメンスタジアムで博多ラーメンを頂く。
ラーメンの後は、近くの山笠で有名な櫛田神社・博多フォークミュージアムへ。神社では「山」を見たりミュージアムでは踊りと歌の実演を見れたり、外国人にもとても興味深いミニツアーになったと思う。日本人としても十分面白かった。 生徒たちと話すのはもちろんすごく面白いが、先生たちと話すのもこれまたいい勉強になる、これまた興味深い自由時間になった。
We arrived at a big shopping mall called “Canal City”, there we had a “2.5 hour free time”. Students spread into groups and went into places in Canal City to enjoy lunch and shopping.
Teachers divided into 2 groups, because it looked difficult to find a good place to have lunch all together. Our group was of me, Lou, Cindy, a Male Japanese teacher and an American teacher at Nakamura Gakuen.
We enjoyed “Hakata Ramen” together. After lunch, we visited “Kushida Shrine” which is very famous for their “Yamagasa Festival” and visited “Hakata Folk Museum” to enjoy a live traditional Hakata fork song and dance.
Talking with teachers was also very interesting to me. I wanted to talk more with other teachers also, enjoying Halal lunch...
<14> 中川からのメッセージ A Massage from Nakagawa
自由時間を終えると、みんな時間通りに集合場所に集まってくる。外国からの生徒たちはそれぞれにたくさんのお土産の袋を抱えて。
またバスに乗ってホテルに向かう。ホテルについたらきっと解散だ。バスが走り出したとき、ここしかないと思って日本の二人の先生に相談する。 「最後に、バスの中の皆さんに、感想を話させて頂けませんでしょうか」 と。 快く了解して頂いた。

みなさん、改めて自己紹介させてください。既に多くの人が知っていると思いますが、私はアメリカチームの先生、Louの友達です。 学校とは全く関係ないのに、昨日FOOD SUMMITを見せて頂いてたいへん驚きました。世界各国から皆さんが集まり、話し合い協力してサミットを作り上げる素晴らしいイベントでした。見学させて頂いてありがとうございます。
中村学園の生徒たちは、登壇した生徒たちだけでなく、聴衆としてサミットに参加した生徒たちも素晴らしい経験をしたと思います。 海外からの生徒の皆さんももちろんそうでしょう。皆さんはこの貴重な経験を忘れないだろうし、今後に活かしていくことだと思います。ただ、皆さんは自分のために活かすためだけでなく、帰国したら学校の友達と、この素晴らしい経験をぜひシェアしてください。その友達も海外に興味を持ち、来年は中村学園に、あるいは世界の他の国に行きたいと思うかもしれません。
今回、皆さんは、外国の生徒たちと協働してひとつのことを話し合う経験をし、またそれだけでなく、交流し友達になるという経験をしました。それは皆さんにとって宝物です。
同じことが、私とLouとの間に起こっています。25年前、コロラドの大学で私たちは出会い友達になり、他の友人たちと一緒に1年間過ごしました。そして、今も交流が続いているからこそ、今回久しぶりに会って、このようにLouの生徒たちや皆さんにも出会うことができたのです。
25年後に、マレーシアに、ウズベキスタンに、韓国に、アメリカに、また日本に、ここで出会った友達に会いに行くのです。もちろん25年より前でもいいんだけど。 素晴らしい出会いを大切にして、交流を続けていきましょう。
このような素晴らしい機会を作って頂き、私まで参加させて頂いて、中村学園と皆さんに感謝します。

「だれやこのオッサン？」というのがすべての生徒・先生たちの率直な感想だと思う。でもまあ、「よく分かんないけど、アメリカの先生も25年前の日本人の友達と会えて嬉しいだろうし、自分もここで出会った友達と交流を続け、大人になってからも友達でいたい」と思う分かりやすいモデルとして理解してもらえて、そして彼らのこの素晴らしい経験の中で、ほんの少しでも思い出の一部として覚えておいてもらえたらなと思う。
After a 2.5 hour free time, students gathered with many shopping bags, and ride on bus again to head to the hotel. It must be the last chance for me, so that I asked the teachers if I can tell students my impression of “FOOD SUMMIT”. They said Okay, and I talked to the students and teachers in the bus.

Hi everybody, let me introduce myself once again, even though most of you guys know me already. I am a friend of Lou, a teacher from the States. We were friends at the University of Colorado, about 25 years ago. Last week Lou gave me a message to tell that he was coming to Fukuoka, and I came to Fukuoka yesterday to see him.
Not only to see one of my best friends, I was so lucky to see you guys’ great event in Fukuoka.
You guys gathered from many countries, and made a excellent Summit altogether. It must be a great experience to each of you, to discuss together, and learn different cultures.
You guys learned a lot. Of course you guys will not forget this experience for ever, but at the same time, you have to bring it back to your school and tell your friends what you experienced in Fukuoka. Your friends may have interests in foreign cultures and maybe try to visit Nakamuraga Gakuen next year, or some other countries in the world.
To have friends in other cultures is very important , and very precious. Please do it , and keep in touch with your new friends.
Same thing is happening to Lou and me. We were close friends 25 years ago, and we have been in touch. That is why we can meet again this time, and moreover, that brought me another chance to meet more people from many countries.
You guys, keep in touch with your new friends. In 25 years, visit Malaysia, Uzbekistan, U.S.A., Korea, and Japan, to meet your friends again, like me and Lou!

I must be a stranger to them in this tour. However, if I could leave some impression to be a peace of their memories in Fukuoka, I would be very happy.

＜15＞バイバイ Bye-bye
ホテルの前にバスが着き、ここで日本人の生徒たちとは解散だと聞いていた。海外の生徒たちは、ホテルの予約の都合でこれから次のホテルに移るらしい。
荷物をバスに積み込んで移動の準備をしている間、生徒たちが最後の記念撮影をし始める。 近くにマレーシアの先生たちがいたので、「写真撮ろう！」と声を掛ける。さっきの大濠公園散策の時にちょっと話して仲良くなっていたのだ。先生が生徒たちも呼んでくれて、マレーシア御一行様と写真を撮る。各国チームの基本は「生徒３人・先生１人」だが、マレーシアチームは、「生徒４人・先生５人」、いちばんの大所帯であった。
The bus arrived at the hotel where this tour was to be over. Some of foreign students and teachers were to leave this hotel to another one.
During the time loading their luggage to the bus, students started their final photo session. I offered to Malaysian teachers to take a photo together, because we talked a little bit during the tour and we were already friends.
次に、ウズベキスタンの生徒たちと写真を撮る。ウズベキスタンの生徒は、男子２人と女子１人。男子２人とは大濠公園やバスの中でいろいろ話して仲良くなっていたので。写真を撮った後、ウズベキスタンの女の子が「Facebookで友達になりませんか？」と聞いてきた。彼女とはほとんど話してなかったんだけど、そう言ってもらえると嬉しい。そして日本人の生徒もひとり友達になりましょうと言ってくる。ありがたく友達にならせて頂く。
Then took a photo with Uzbekistan students and Japanese students. I talked a lot with 2 Uzbekistan boys but not with a Uzbekistan girl during the tour, but she offered me to be friends on Facebook. One Japanese student offered the same to me. I had not expected to have such cute students as my friends!
この後、アメリカチームとウズベキスタンチームが新しいホテルに移動したが、アメリカチームの女子2人はバスに乗ってこなかった。それぞれ中村学園の生徒の家に2泊ホームステイするらしく、ここでバイバイだった。LouとCindyと生徒たちと写真を撮ろうと思っていたが、いつでも撮れると思っていたので撮っていなかった。とてもザンネンである。でもまあいつか会いに行けたらいいな、と考えておくことにしよう。
After that, the U.S. team and Uzbekistan team moved to a new hotel, but 2 American girls were not in the bus. Lou told me that they were going to stay at Japanese students’ home for 2 nights. I was planning to take a photo with Lou and Cindy and their students before I leave Fukuoka, but I couldn’t. It was pretty sad, but I will visit Lou in Corning in a near future, and hopefully I can see them again there.
マレーシアの女性先生たくさんの中でひとりだけ男性先生がいた。あとウズベキスタンは男性先生一人。ふたりとも少しだけしか話してなかったが、「Nice to meet you, Nakagawa-san!」とか言ってくれる！ できればもう少し話をしたかった。二人との写真を撮らなかったのも残念である。いつの日かそれぞれの国に遊びに行きたい。
There in Malaysian team only one male teacher was. Uzbekistan teacher was a male teacher. I talk with them only a little during the tour, but at the leaving moment, they said “ Nice to meet you Nakagawa-san!” I was so happy to hear that. I want to visit them someday.
<16> 福岡を発つ Leaving Fukuoka
Louたちが新しいホテルにチェックインした後、Louと二人で少しだけビールを飲みながら話す。本当に驚くべき週末であった。中村学園がこういうイベントを企画して、そこにLouたちを招聘し、そしてLouが俺を呼んでくれて、中村学園を始め各国の学校からの参加者と交流させてもらうことができて嬉しかった。
そして、学生時代に海外の友人ができて、交流を続けていてまた会えて、いまでもまだお互いに大切な友人であることを改めて確認できたことが、本当に嬉しかった。
中村学園女子高校の生徒・先生のみなさん、世界中の高校からの生徒・先生の皆さん、そしてLou、この度は本当にありがとうございました！ また会いましょう！
After they checked in a new hotel, Lou and I talked again for a little bit , drinking beer.
It was such an amazing weekend, both of us said. Both of us thanked Nakamura Gakuen for holding such an event inviting many students and teachers from foreign countries. And I thanked Lou for inviting me to Fukuoka for me to have a chance to meet many students and teachers.
Of course, I was also very happy to see my old friend again, and to talk a lot to find we are still very close friends.
