Before going to Canada, I had researched some English schools to join and sent emails to some schools. Finally, I chose the school that is located in Victoria which is the southern place of Vancouver Island, because the place is not colder than I imagined even if it was in winter. On the first day, I took a test to check my English skills. I joined a class of level 5 out of 9 levels. I thought that I probably got a good score in the grammar section. The class was higher than I expected. I felt that it became a difficult situation as soon as I took the class, because I did not understand what my classmates said, and it seemed they could not understand what I said.
At that time, I realized that they could not understand Japanese English is named 'katakana Eigo'. After considering, I decided to learn pronunciation. I researched the lesson for pronunciation on the web. And then, I ended up taking a lesson from a Japanese teacher even though I was in Canada. I also learned that there is something called 'Phonics' for the first time.
