昔の日本の言葉に「頭がまわらなければ尾もまわらない」というのがあるが、私は、経営者が100人なら100人の人を緊張させて、大いに成果を上げようと思えば、その人の活動が、端の人がみて「気の毒な」と思うくらいにならないといけないと思う。

「うちのおやじ、もう一生懸命にやっとる。気の毒や」という感じが起これば、全部が一致団結して働くだろう。けれどもそうでない限りは、経営者の活動の程度に応じてみな働くだろうと思う。

人間というのはそんなものである。決してぼろいことはない。自分はタバコをくわえて遊んでいながら「働け」と言っても、それは働かない。私はそういうふうに考えてやってきた。

There is an old Japanese saying, "If you can't turn your head, you can't turn your tail." I believe that if a manager wants to make 100 people nervous and achieve great results, his or her activities must be such that the people on the other end of the line feel sorry for him or her.

If you want to make a big impact, your activities must be such that people on the other end of the line feel sorry for you. If people feel sorry for him, they will work in unison. But unless that happens, I think everyone will work according to the degree of the manager's activities.

That is the way human beings are. They are never ragged. If you tell someone to work while you are playing with a cigarette in your mouth, they will not work. That's how I've been thinking.
