さるすべり（百日紅）：2024年7月24日（水）

酷暑の夏に，京都の道端に力強く咲くのが百日紅（さるすべり，ひゃくじつこう）である。今から50年ほど前，私が小学生だった頃に，愛知県豊川市の平尾小学校の校庭の隅にあったブランコの近くに，大きな百日紅（さるすべり）の木があり，小学生ながらも，よく登っていた記憶がある。木の表皮がつるつるしていて，木に登ることが得意なサルもすべるのだろうから，「さるすべり」と言うのだろうとしか思っていなかった。

　京都市では，2月に桜が咲き始め，ハナミズキの時季が過ぎ，藤と杜若（カキツバタ）の時季が過ぎ，6月の紫陽花（アジサイ）の時季が過ぎると，酷暑の夏の時季に，ひときわ目につくのが，あちらこちらで力強く色鮮やかな花が咲く百日紅（さるすべり）である。名前の通り，100日ほどの長期間，ピンク，白，紅（赤），紫など鮮やかな色の花が咲き続ける。

　京都市にある大学の研究室では，昨秋にスミレの種を蒔いたところ，３月から咲き始め，100日以上過ぎているが今も咲いている。百日紅（さるすべり）の開花期間に劣らず，長い間，咲いている。そこで，今年4月に，千日紅の種を買い求め，研究室の窓の鉢に蒔いてみた。千日紅は，名前の通り，花の部分が，ドライフラワーにしても千日間，色が変わらないという。すくすくと大きく成長しており，秋までには鉢にたくさんの花を咲かせてくるだろうと期待している。

Crape Myrtle (Hyakujitsukou)：July 24th(Wednesday)

In the scorching summer, the Crape Myrtle (Sarusuberi, Hyakujitsukou) blooms vigorously along the streets of Kyoto. About 50 years ago, when I was an elementary school student, there was a large Crape Myrtle tree near the swings at the corner of the schoolyard of Hirao Elementary School in Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture. I have fond memories of climbing that tree often, even as a young child. The bark of the tree was smooth, and I believed it was called "Sarusuberi" because even monkeys, adept at climbing trees, would slip on it.

In Kyoto City, cherry blossoms begin to bloom in February. After the Dogwood season passes, the seasons of Wisteria and Iris follow, then comes the Hydrangea season in June. During the sweltering summer, the strikingly vibrant blooms of the Crape Myrtle can be seen all over, as its name suggests, it continues to bloom for about 100 days with bright pink, white, red, and purple flowers.

In a laboratory at a university in Kyoto City, I sowed violet seeds last autumn. They began blooming in March, and even after more than 100 days, they are still in bloom, rivaling the long flowering period of the Crape Myrtle. In April of this year, I bought Gomphrena seeds and planted them in pots by the laboratory windows. True to their name, Gomphrena flowers are said to retain their color for a thousand days even when dried. They are growing vigorously, and I am looking forward to seeing many flowers bloom in the pots by autumn.
