「出町ふたば」の栗餅，豆餅と水無月：2024年9月8日（日）
京都市下京区の自宅から北区上賀茂にある大学までをマウンテンバイクで通勤し始めて4年4ヵ月が経過したが，往復ルートのほとんどは堀川通（途中，東堀川通）を利用している。ただ，月に数回程度ではあるが，ルートを変えて通勤することがある。
高辻通を東に走り，京都銀行本店の前を通り過ぎて，烏丸通を横断し，仏光寺の前を通り，河原町通を横断し，木屋町通仏光寺にある仏光寺公園から鴨川河川敷（鴨川遊歩道）に入る。綺麗に舗装されたばかりのサイクリングロードをマウンテンバイクで全力疾走すれば，初老の私でも，風を感じることで爽快感を味わえる。
サイクリングロードに沿って松原橋（豊臣秀吉が六条坊門小路を今の五条通に替えるまでは五条(松原)橋と呼ばれていた）の下をマウンテンバイクのギアを上げて快走する。河川敷を鴨川納涼床の川床を左手に見ながら，鴨川デルタをさらに北進していくと，ほどなく出町橋に差し掛かる。
出町橋で河川敷から坂を登り上がると，大きな柳が出町橋のそばに生えている。京都と福井県小浜市方面の若狭湾を結ぶ鯖街道口の石標があり，ここが起点であることがわかる。その左手先に豊川稲荷大明神があり，タクシー乗り場を通り抜けて河原町通を渡ると，右手先には出町桝形商店街，正面には観光客に人気の豆餅の「出町ふたば」（創業1899(明治32)年）の店舗がある。
「出町ふたば」の豆餅は，北海道富良野の赤エンドウを使った大福餅である。この時季は，なんと言っても，京都人には出町ふたばの「豆餅」よりも「栗餅」のほうが気になる。最近では，この触れ込みがSNSなどで広まり，観光客の多くが栗餅を買い求めるようになったので，なかなか手に入らない。私も，昨日，賀茂川河川敷の隅に自転車を置かせてもらい，この「栗餅」と「豆餅」を買いにいくことにした。保存料が添加されていないため，お土産用には向かず，消費期限は「本日限り」。昨日，長い列に並んで買った豆餅，栗餅，黒豆大福，水無月（上の写真参照）を，家内と二人で，当日中に美味しくいただいた。
Demachi Futaba's Kuri-mochi, Mame-mochi and Minazuki: Sunday, September 8, 2024
It has been 4 years and 4 months since I started commuting by mountain bike from my home in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City, to the university in Kamigamo, Kita Ward. For most of the round-trip route, I use Horikawa Street (and part of the way, East Horikawa Street). However, several times a month, I occasionally change my route for commuting.
I head east on Takatsuji Street, pass in front of the main branch of Kyoto Bank, cross Karasuma Street, pass in front of Bukkoji Temple, cross Kawaramachi Street, and enter the Kamo River riverside (Kamo River promenade) from Bukkoji Park on Kiyamachi Street. Even in my middle age, when I sprint at full speed along the freshly paved cycling road on my mountain bike, I can still feel the refreshing sensation of the wind.
Following the cycling road, I ride briskly under Matsubara Bridge (which was known as Gojo [Matsubara] Bridge until Toyotomi Hideyoshi changed Rokujobo-mon Street to what is now Gojo Street), shifting up the gears on my mountain bike. As I continue north along the riverbank, with the Kamo River Noryo-yuka dining platforms on my left, I soon reach Demachi Bridge.
When you climb up the slope from the riverbank at Demachi Bridge, a large willow tree grows near the bridge. There's a stone marker indicating the entrance to the Saba Kaido (Mackerel Highway), which connects Kyoto and Obama City in Fukui Prefecture along the Wakasa Bay route, showing that this is the starting point. To the left, you'll find Toyokawa Inari Daimyojin Shrine, and if you pass through the taxi stand and cross Kawaramachi Street, you'll see Demachi Masugata Shopping Street on your right and directly in front, the popular tourist destination "Demachi Futaba" (established in 1899), known for its mame-mochi (bean rice cakes).
Demachi Futaba’s Mame-mochi is a type of daifuku rice cake made with red peas from Furano, Hokkaido. At this time of year, Kyoto locals are more interested in Demachi Futaba’s 'Kuri-mochi' than the Mame-mochi. Recently, this reputation has spread through social media, and many tourists have started to buy Kuri-mochi, making it harder to get. I, too, left my bicycle in a corner along the Kamo River and made a point to buy both 'Kuri-mochi' and 'Mame-mochi' yesterday. Since no preservatives are added, they are not suitable as souvenirs, and the consumption period is limited to 'the same day only.' Yesterday, after standing in a long line, my wife and I enjoyed the Mame-mochi, Kuri-mochi, Kuromame-daifuku and Minazuki (see the photo above) we bought, savoring them all within the day.
