京都市内の鴨川（鴨川デルタ以北は賀茂川と呼ばれる）では，年間に約100匹のオオサンショウウオが保護されている。大雨で川が増水すると，河川敷でオオサンショウウオが見つかることが多い。日本固有種のオオサンショウウオは特別天然記念物に指定されている。
日本の環境省は，2024年7月1日から，中国原産のチュウゴクオオサンショウウオの日本固有種以外のオオサンショウウオを「特定外来生物」に指定することにしており，7月1日以降は移動や譲渡を禁じ，自治体に駆除を呼び掛けている。チュウゴクオオサンショウウオは約50年前に食用として輸入され，寿命が長く，攻撃的で繁殖場所を独占し，日本固有種のオオサンショウウオの保全が難しくなるという。
実際には，すでに日本固有種のオオサンショウウオとチュウゴクオオサンショウウオとの交雑種が増えており，DNA鑑定をしなければ，固有種なのか，外来種なのかは見分けがつかないという。
5日前の5月28日に，京都市内では大雨警報が発令されるほどの大雨に見舞われて，鴨川（賀茂川）が増水した。翌日の5月29日に京都市北区の賀茂川では河川敷で約1.3ｍのオオサンショウウオが捕獲され，5月30日には京都府立植物園内でも約1ｍのオオサンショウウオが捕獲された。

In the Kamo River(鴨川) in Kyoto (referred to as the Kamo River(賀茂川) north of the Kamo River Delta), approximately 100 Japanese giant salamanders are protected each year. After heavy rain, when the river's water level rises, Japanese giant salamanders are often found on the riverbanks. This species, endemic to Japan, is designated as a special natural monument.
The Ministry of the Environment of Japan has decided to designate the Chinese giant salamander, a non-native species to Japan, as a "specified invasive species" starting from July 1, 2024. After this date, the movement and transfer of these salamanders will be prohibited, and local governments are being urged to eliminate them. The Chinese giant salamander was imported as a food source about 50 years ago. Due to its long lifespan, aggressive nature, and tendency to monopolize breeding areas, it poses a threat to the conservation of the native Japanese giant salamander.
In reality, hybrids between the native Japanese giant salamander and the Chinese giant salamander are already increasing, making it impossible to distinguish between the native and invasive species without DNA testing.
On May 28, five days ago, Kyoto City experienced heavy rainfall that led to a flood warning, causing the Kamo River to swell. On May 29, a giant salamander approximately 1.3 meters in length was captured on the riverbank of the Kamo River in Kita Ward, Kyoto. On May 30, another giant salamander, about 1 meter long, was captured within the Kyoto Prefectural Botanical Gardens.
