『History of Japanese Hardcore Techno』のプロモーション・ミックス第二弾は、M-Projectとのコラボレーションや『J-Core Masterz』『Bastard Pop Terrorists』への参加で国内外のJ-Coreファンから高い評価を受けているイギリスのTANUKIがミックスを提供してくれました。
2000年代のメロディアスな初期J-Coreスタイルとマッシブさのある伝統的なUKハードコアを組み合わせたTANUKIのハードコア・スタイルはずば抜けた個性があり、彼の楽曲はJ-Coreにおいて非常に重要な役割を果たしています。『History of Japanese Hardcore Techno』の中でもTANUKIの名前は登場しており、日本のハードコア・シーンとは深い関係があります。
今回提供してくれたミックスは2000年代～2010年代のJ-Core/UKハードコアをメインに構成し、後半からはDJ SHARPNELのクラシックが連発されるという日本のハードコア・シーンへの愛に溢れた素晴らしい内容となっています。
TANUKIへのショートインタビューでは日本のハードコア・シーンに参加した経緯や影響を受けたプロデューサー、ミックスのテーマについてなど興味深いお話を聞かせて貰えました。

Q1. あなたが日本のハードコア・シーンの存在を知ったのはいつ頃ですか？ / When did you first become aware of the Japanese hardcore scene?
趣味を通じて、直接的にせよ間接的にせよ、好きなジャンルに出会えたのはとても幸運だった。高校時代はギター、グラフィックデザイン（PhotoshopとCinema4D）、スケートボードに夢中だった。12歳頃にギターにのめり込み、毎日何時間もギターを弾き続け、あっという間にギターに飲み込まれ、私の人生となった。当時はヘビーメタルとクラシック音楽が主なジャンルで、Helloween、DragonForce、Meshuggah、Metallica、Megadeth、Racer X、Symphony Xなどのバンドに影響を受けた。Perfumeが初めて「Polyrhythm」をリリースしたときに間接的に知ったのは、実はMeshuggahのおかげなんだ。当時はアニメもよく見ていたので、OPやEDの名曲の数々から、本当に素晴らしいJ-POPの数々を知るきっかけになりました。
学校から帰ると、スケートボードに出かけていなければ、いつもインターネットのフォーラムで一日を過ごしていた。特に「DutchDesignz」というフォーラムは、私にとって「オンラインの家」のようなものだった。そこはグラフィックデザインのフォーラムで、私は毎日そこにアクセスして、みんなが投稿するチュートリアルからPhotoshop/C4Dの新しいことを学んでいた。本当にクールなコミュニティがあり、同じ志を持つ人たちと友達になるには最高だった。そのフォーラムの友人は、私が日本の音楽にハマっていることを知っていたので、よくMSNメッセンジャーでチャットをして、彼が最近知った新しいバンドの情報を共有していました。ある夜、彼は私に 「18 ハイパーDDR.mp3 」というファイルを送ってきた。それまで聴いたことのないような、ハードで、それでいて信じられないほどメロディアスで、本当に驚かされ、このようなスタイルの音楽をもっと聴きたいと切望した。大げさに言うつもりはないが、あの曲は私の人生を変えた。一晩でメタル・ヘッドからJ-CORE中毒になった。その瞬間から、エレクトロニック・ミュージックを聴くだけでなく、いつか自分もプロデュースしてみたいと思うようになった。
I've been very lucky to come across my favourite genres, either directly or indirectly, through my hobbies. During high school all I cared about was guitar, graphic design [Photoshop & Cinema4D], and skateboarding. I got into guitar around the age of 12 and spent hours playing it every day, it very quickly consumed me and became my life. At that time heavy metal and classical music were the main genres I listened to, my inspirations were, and still are, bands like Helloween, DragonForce, Meshuggah, Metallica, Megadeth, Racer X, Symphony X, etc. It's actually thanks to Meshuggah I indirectly found out about Perfume when they first released "Polyrhythm". I watched a lot of anime back then too, this led me to discover tons of really amazing J-Pop from all the classic OP and EDs I'd heard.
Whenever I'd get home from school, if I wasn't out skateboarding, I'd spend the rest of the day on internet forums. One in particular called DutchDesignz felt very much like an "online home" for me. It was a graphic design forum, I'd be on there every day learning new stuff in Photoshop/C4D from tutorials people posted. It had a really cool community, and was great for making friends with like-minded people. A friend from that forum knew I was into Japanese music, so we'd often chat on MSN Messenger and he'd share info on new bands that he'd recently found out about. One night he sent me a file named "18 ハイパーDDR.mp3" [on the 15th of July 2007, at 00:40 to be exact - I still have the file he sent] and that was it for me, I was completely hooked. I'd heard nothing like it before, it was hard-hitting, yet incredibly melodic, it really took me by surprise and I craved more music in that style. I don't mean to exaggerate when I say this, but that track changed my life - I went from being a metalhead to a J-Core addict overnight. From that moment on I became a lot more interested in not only listening to electronic music, but now also wanting to try and produce it someday too, specifically J-Core.
Q2. 日本のハードコア・シーンの情報をどうやって入手していましたか？ / How did you get information about the hardcore scene in Japan at that time?
日本のハードコア・シーンを初めて知ったのは16歳の時で、当時はインターネットがちょっと変わった場所だったから、どこを見ればいいのかよくわからないと、情報を見つけるのが難しいこともあった。日本のハードコアというジャンルを知った当初は、関連するフォーラムを知らなかったので、新譜のリリースがあればGUHROOVYのウェブサイトを閲覧することがほとんどだった。時が経ち、ソーシャルメディアが普及するにつれて、Twitterがシーンのニュースを知るための主要な場所になった。
I was 16 when I first learned about the Japanese Hardcore scene, the internet was a bit of a different place back then so it was sometimes harder to find information on things unless you knew exactly where to look. I didn't know of any forums relating to Japanese Hardcore when I first found out about the genre, so I would mostly browse the GUHROOVY website for new releases. As time went on and social media became more prevalent, Twitter became the prime place to be for news on the scene.
Q3. 特に影響を受けた日本人ハードコア・プロデューサーは？ / Which Japanese hardcore producers have particularly influenced you?
これは今まで聞かれた中で一番難しい質問だ。正直なところ、私に大きな影響を与えてくれた日本のプロデューサーはたくさんいて、そのすべてを挙げることは不可能だ！日本のハードコアというジャンルがいかに素晴らしいかという第一印象を形成してくれた人たちを挙げるとしたら、感謝しなければならない：

Q4. あなたが日本のハードコア・シーンと繋がった経緯を教えてください。 / How did you get connected with the Japanese hardcore scene?
SoundCloudとTwitterによって、それまで聴いていたアーティストとつながることができたので、突然彼らと交流できるようになり、彼らがリアルタイムで音楽を発表するのを見ることができるようになったのは、とてもシュールで、とてもエキサイティングなことだった。私にインスピレーションを与えてくれたアーティストには、時々ツイートしたりDMを送ったりして、彼らの音楽の楽しさを伝えていた。ツイッターは当時、有意義なつながりを作るのに本当に素晴らしい場所だった。私の最初の音楽のいくつかは、Mob Squad TokyoやMPTのコンピレーションでリリースされた！ティーンエイジャーだった私にとって、大好きなアーティストと一緒に、大好きなレーベルから音楽をリリースできたことは本当に大きなことで、本当にエキサイティングな時間だった！

SoundCloud and Twitter allowed me to connect with the artists I had been listening to up until that point, so it was quite surreal, and very exciting for me to now all of a sudden be able to interact with them and see them release music in real-time. I would sometimes tweet or DM the artists who inspired me, just to tell them how I really enjoyed their music. Twitter really was a fantastic place to make meaningful connections back in the day. Some of my first music was released on Mob Squad Tokyo and MPT compilations, I'm extremely thankful to M-Project for that! Being a teenager and getting to release music alongside the artists I loved, on the label(s) I loved was a really big deal for me, it was a really exciting time!
The Japanese scene is just so incredibly welcoming, I will always be extremely grateful for that. I was just some random teenager from Scotland, but I was welcomed with open arms into a music scene I loved that was halfway across the world. That's something I'll never forget and I'm truly appreciative of. I'm fortunate to have made lifelong friends, and have had many fun memories over the years, all thanks to music.
Q5. あたは幾つか日本人HardcoreプロデューサーとのコラボレーションやRemixを行われていますが、その中で気に入っている曲は？ / You have collaborated/remixed with several Japanese hardcore producers. What is your favorite song among them?
M-Projectさんとのコラボは本当に楽しくて、とても楽しく作ることができました。 私はいつも彼のマキナのリードパターンなどメロディーなどが大好きだったので、マキナとハードコアの両方のサウンドの組み合わせで満たされた曲を作ることができて素晴らしい経験でした!
The collaboration with M-Project was really fun, I had a great time making that. I've always loved his Makina lead patterns, so to make a track that was filled with a combination of both Makina and hardcore sounds was a great experience!
Q6. 今回提供してくれたMixのテーマはなんですか？ / What is the theme of this Mix?
このミックスのすべての曲は私にとって特別であり、私に大きな影響を与えました。 ミックスの約 70% は、10 代の頃、高校の通学中、スケートボード中に毎日聴いていた曲で構成されています。 DJ Sharpnel さんのいくつかの曲は、それぞれ何百回も聴いています (「オタクオーバークロックス21」は私のお気に入りのアルバムの 1 つです)。 いくつかの曲は私が制作を始めてから少し後にリリースされたもので、当時の私に大きな影響を与えました。

Every track in this mix is special to me, and has influenced me greatly. About 70% of the mix consists of tracks I used to listen to every day as a teenager, while commuting to/from high school, or while skateboarding. A couple of the DJ Sharpnel tracks I've listened to hundreds of times each (Otaku Overclocks 21 is one of my favourite albums). Some tracks were released slightly after I started producing, they influenced me greatly at the time.
The theme for this mix is "a tribute to the artists who shaped who I am today".
Q7. 日本のHardcoreと海外のHardcoreで最も違う部分とは？ / What are the most different aspects of Hardcore between Japan and other countries?
日本のハードコアな曲が連れて行ってくれる旅が大好きです。 曲は、最初は完璧に構成された 200BPM のカオスのように聞こえるかもしれませんが、次の瞬間には、想像できる限り最も美しいメロディックなパッセージがどこからともなく湧き出てくるのが聞こえるでしょう。その併置が私にとって非常に魅力的です。 また、コード進行や音選びも完璧で、おそらく日本語の音節の性質がメロディーのリズムに影響を与えているのではないかと感じ、とても興味深いと思いました。
I love the journey a lot of Japanese hardcore tracks can take you on. A track might initially sound like perfectly structured 200BPM chaos, and the next moment you'll hear the most beautiful melodic passages imaginable come out of nowhere - that juxtaposition is very appealing to me. Also the chord progressions and note choices are just perfection, I feel that perhaps the syllabic nature of the Japanese language can influence the rhythm of melodic passages, which I find really interesting!
Q8. 今後のスケジュールを教えてください。 / What is your schedule for the future?
近い将来、UKGやBreaksやRaveっぽいものをいくつかリリースする予定です。 最近、若い頃に聴いていたビデオゲームの音楽をよく聴いているので、そのテーマを念頭に置いて音楽を作りたいと思うようになりました。 夏の間はできるだけ多くの作品をリリースしたいと思っています。大学は夏休みに入り、より多くの時間が取れると考えています。 また、ちょっとした楽しみのために、もう一度 J-Pop ハードコアのブートレッグを作りたいと思っています。

Within the very near future I have plans to release some UKG, Breaks, and Rave-y stuff. Recently I've been listening to a lot of the video game music I grew up with, it's got me quite inspired to make some music with that theme in mind. Throughout summer I'd like to release as much as possible, seeing as I'll be on summer break from university so I'll have more time. I'd also really like to make some more J-Pop hardcore bootlegs again, just for some fun!
