I’m Nadine from Equal!

Here, I am writing to you guys as a longtime fangirl. I have been a fangirl ever since I was in my early teenage, been in a lot of fandoms, but today I want to write my little observation on the double standards in the world of Korean Idols (or maybe just idols in general!). Keep in mind that they are solely based on my personal opinion.

First of all, what is a double standard?

Double standard is when a situation is looked at differently depending on the subject that does the action. For example, when a man voices their opinions in a meeting it could be seen as something to look up to but when a woman does it, people might think that she is too talkative. Sounds familiar…? We get the idea now, right?

In the years that I have been a fan, I have seen these situations happen not only by a few times, but quite often. The double standard in the Korean idol world has been going on too often that sometimes people barely see it as something wrong anymore. Here are a few double standard that happens quite too often in the fandom:

Body image

It’s very common to see how women and men are treated very differently on their physical appearance. Female idols are expected to maintain the slim, light skin, long hair image for the public. When a female idol looked slightly bigger than what she looked like a few months before, comments on the internet will come straight to the point of, “why is she gaining so much weight?” so on and so forth. Not only, per say, looks biggee to weight, female idols would be criticized when she gained some weight due to muscle gain too. What’s wrong with women not having slim bodies? As when male idols change their physical looks, fans or the general public would not comment too much on it and they would be more likely to give out compliments! Here you can see how double standard works towards one thing.

Choreography

Sometimes you have more masculine or feminine movements in dancing and I think that’s normal. Idols are trained to do both movements for a better performance for the general public! As you can see, female idols are mostly assigned to perform a more of feminine movements more than masculine ones. Sometimes, fans would also prefer girl groups to dance a more feminine concept and would be looked differently if they do cover one of the boy group’s choreography while reaction would be the opposite if a boy group does girl group’s choreography.

In the end…


As a fan, I wish people could start looking at idols not as just an entertainment object and start to also treat them on how we treat another human being! These double standards are also happening in ourselves without us knowing. Let’s try to be aware of them and try to treat everyone equally so we can create a better environment for everyone around us! ✨

みなさん、こんにちは。

今回、私は長年のファンガールとして記事を書いています。私は10代前半の頃からずっとファンで、たくさんのファンダムに参加してきましたが、今日は韓国アイドル（というかアイドル全般！）の世界のダブルスタンダードについて、ちょっとした考察を書いてみたいと思います。あくまでも私の個人的な意見であることをご了承ください。

まず、ダブルスタンダードとは何か？

ダブルスタンダードとは、行動を起こす主体によって状況が異なることです。例えば、男性が会議で自分の意見を言うと、それは尊敬すべきことだと思われるかもしれません。しかし、女性がそれをするとおしゃべりだと思われてしまうかもしれません。よくある話ですよね......？なんとなくわかったでしょうか？

私がファンになって数年、このような状況を目の当たりにしてきたのは、数回だけではありません。韓国アイドル界のダブルスタンダードがあまりにも頻繁に起こっているので、もはや何かぎおかしいとしか思えません。ここでは、ファンの間で頻繁に起こっているダブルスタンダードを紹介しましょう。

ボディイメージ

女性と男性では身だしなみの扱いが大きく異なることはよくあることです。女性アイドルは、スリムで明るい肌、ロングヘアのイメージを世間一般に向けて維持することが求められています。女性アイドルが数ヶ月前の容姿よりも少しでも大きく見えた場合、ネット上では「なんでこんなに太っているんだ」などのコメントが飛び交います。体重に対して見た目が大きいだけでなく、女性アイドルも筋肉がついて少し太っただけで批判されてしまうのです。女性がスリムな体をしていないことの何が悪いのでしょうか？男性アイドルが容姿を変えた時のように、ファンや一般の人はあまりコメントをしないか、褒めた方がいいんじゃないでしょうか？ダブルスタンダードがいかに一つのことに向けて作用しているかがわかります。

振り付け

ダンスでは男性的な動きと女性的な動きがあることもありますし、それが普通だと思います。アイドルは、より良いパフォーマンスをするために、両方の動きをするように訓練されています。このように、女性アイドルは男性的な動きよりも女性的な動きをするように割り当てられていることがほとんどです。また、ファンの間では、女性アイドルグループがより女性的なコンセプトで踊ることを好むこともあり、男性アイドルグループの振り付けをカバーした際のファンの反応は、男性アイドルグループが女性アイドルグループの振り付けをカバーした場合と逆になることもあります。


最後に


ファンとしては、アイドルをただの娯楽の対象として見るのではなく、他の人間と対等に扱ってほしいと思います。このようなダブルスタンダードは、私たちの知らないうちに自分自身の中でも起こっています。それを自覚し、誰に対しても平等に接するようにして、みんなにとってより良い環境を作れるようにしていきましょう ✨
