  1. In 1877, in Kyushu, samurai led by Saigo Takamori rebelled against the Meiji government. 

  2. They rebelled because the government stopped their unemployment benefits and took away their swords, which were special privileges for samurai. 

  3. However, due to the difference in military strength, the samurai were defeated, and Saigo Takamori took his own life. 

  4. This rebellion caused the Meiji government to spend a lot of money and face financial difficulties. 

  5. But through this defeat, the samurai realized they couldn't oppose the Meiji government. 

  6. As a result, they chose to fight with words instead of weapons and started a movement to establish a parliament. 

  7. They also became more involved internationally, helping open up Korea and sending samurai there.
