      Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says five members of military advisors were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Syria. Iran state-run media reported on a statement issued by the Guard Corps on Saturday that says fighter jet found the building in Syria's capital, Damascus. In a separate statement, Nasr Kanani, a spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the attack was a desperate attempt by Israel to spread instability and insecurity in the region. Kanani added that Iran reserves the right to respond to what he said was organized terrorism. Meantime, concerns are growing over a possible escalation of retaliatory military exchanges between Iran and Israel. The two nations have been increasingly at odds over recent events in the Gaza Strip. While Israel continues its military campaign there against the Islamic group Hamas, Iran supports the militants in December. What are thought to have been Israeli airstrikes in Syria, killed three Revolutionary Guard Corps members, including a senior advisor. The guard said he carried out retaliatory ballistic missile strikes on Tuesday against what it said were Israeli targets in northern Iraq.

     More than two weeks have passed since the powerful New Year's Day earthquake devastated Central Japan. Survivors are trying to make the best of their circumstances in shelters or while sleeping in their cars, in Ishikawa prefecture. 232 people had been confirmed dead, including 14 who are suspected of dying from disaster-related causes. Officials say 22 others remain unaccounted for. A survivor in Suzu city says she is trying to rebuild her life while dealing with the loss of loved ones. "I was pulled out of that hole." She was rescued by neighbors from under her collapsed house, but her husband and mother-in-law were found dead. "I believe my husband helped me keep alive. So I will try to move forward." In Wajima city, many evacuees are opting to sleep in their vehicles rather than in shelters due to concerns over infectious diseases. Medical staff are also calling on people to be cautious of so-called Economy Class syndrome, when blood clots form in veins from lack of movement. Nurses are visiting the cars to encourage people to stretch regularly and stay hydrated. Weather officials forecast continuing rainy and snowy conditions over the next few days. The officials warn people to stay alert for possible landslides as the ground was loosened by the quake. The tourism industry has been reeling from the impact of the quake. The number of visitors to the prefectural capital, Kanazawa city, and other parts of southern Ishikawa prefecture, where damage was relatively light, has fallen sharply. Nine inns in Kanazawa Juwaku Onsen experienced relatively little damage from the quake, but the owner of one guesthouse says many people have canceled their reservations even after he tried to reassure them that the inn was safe. He says there have been some 180 cancellations so far this month. The prefecture's travel agent association says some 26,000 hotel bookings worth more than three and a half million dollars have been canceled, mainly in the cities of Kanazawa and Kaga. "I want to work with the entire community and let people know that we are still welcoming tourists." Omicho market shopping area in central Kanazawa is a popular tourist destination. About 170 shops line the streets, most of them selling regional delicacies. The local Merchants Association says the number of visitors has plunged by 70 to 80%. Ishikawa prefecture is well known for its seasonal seafood, with cod fish and crabs highly prized in winter, but seafood deliveries have dropped sharply as the quake caused extensive damage to ports. Retailers are working hard to find other sources of fish. "Kanazawa is close to Noto Peninsula, so I want to keep encouraging the people in Noto until they recover." He says that he is worried as business has taken a turn for the worse. He also says he wants people in the stricken areas to take care and for visitors to stop by the market if they have the opportunity.

     Meanwhile, experts say the earthquake caused land upheavals of more than two meters in some places along the Noto Peninsula's northern coast. A group of researchers has been examining the region. Associate Professor ISHIYAMA Tatsuya of the University of Tokyo's earthquake research institute is among them. Members of the group surveyed an area in Wajima city that is about four kilometers long. They say they found land upheavals of at least one meter in several locations. They also say they saw upheavals of up to about 2.2 meters along the coast of the Wajima Zaki Machi district. The group says rocky terrain that was likely submerged previously is now above water. The area formerly had a saltwater swimming pool. Builders created it by drawing seawater into a dugout section of a rocky reef. But the researchers say the water has dried up completely. The pool is a state-registered tangible cultural asset. "This is probably the first time that such large seismic shifts have been seen. These findings will help us understand the kinds of earthquakes that may occur when active seabed faults shift." A separate group of experts conducted a survey in Wajima city earlier; they confirmed the quake caused land upheavals of more than four meters along the northwestern coast of the peninsula.
