英単語の知らなかった用法10

簡単とおもわれる動詞でも、私の知らなかった使い方がありました。そういったものを紹介しています。

今回は、drink sit close　です。

1．drink

drink to
成功を望む

I'll drink to you. Good luck!
私はあなたに乾杯します。がんばってくださいね。

drink up
飲み干す

He drank up a whole litre of beer.
彼は1リットルのビールを飲み干した。

2.sit

sit (an examination)
試験を受ける

I hear that young people were sitting an examination today.
今日は若い人たちが試験を受けていたと聞きました。

※ take an exam はアメリカ、sit an exam はイギリスの用法のちがいがあります。

sit on (委員会)
委員会のメンバー

How can he sit on the committee with his track record of sexual abuse.
性的虐待の実績を持つ彼が、なぜ委員会のメンバーなのか。

sit around
有益でないことをして時間を費やしている

Others sit around and talk or sing.
他の人は座って話したり歌ったりしている。

Life's too short to sit around moping.
人生は、ぼんやり座っているには短すぎる。

sit back
リラックスして起こっていることに
かかわらないでいる。

Get on with life and don't sit back and mope. じっとしていないで、人生を歩みなさい。

sit in on
同席する

I was allowed to sit in on an executive meeting.
重役会議にも同席させてもらった。

sit (something) out
終わるまで待つ

He would have to sit it out, but he would live. 辛抱しなければならないが、彼は生きている。

sit through
それを楽しんでないけれども
とどまっていなければならない。

I didn't think I could sit through the film again. It was so harrowing and tore me apart.私はこの映画をもう一度見ることになるとは思いませんでした。とても悲惨で、私の心を引き裂きました。

3. close

close up
廃止する

We must close up the old well; it's dangerous.古い井戸は危険なので閉鎖しなければならない。

close up とshutdownは違うか？

​I think in the case of a business, “close up” means at the end of the day, I close up the shop. (We open again tomorrow at 8:00 AM)
I think shut down means the shop is going out of business, so we are shutting it down permanently.

close upとfocus onのちがいは？

Close up will be "going nearer to" while focus on will be "paying more attention to"

close in on
近づいている

Catch the witness lying and close in on the truth!
