山姥ノ髪ノ毛

ヤマンバノカミノケ


山姥（ヤマンバ）とは、奥深い山の中に棲む
老婆の姿をした妖怪の事で、山に迷い込んだ
旅人に宿を提供し、優しく食事までもてなす
も、旅人が眠りにつくと、正体を表して旅人
を喰い殺してしまう化物の事である。


元々は豪雪地域などで、口減しの為に山の奥
に置き去りにされ、棄てられた女性が恨みの
末に変化した妖怪とされ、何とも悲しい事が
現実に行われていたものだと思う。


写真に写るものが、その『山姥ノ髪ノ毛」で
その正体は、菌類である。特定した茸でなく
根状菌糸束と呼ばれるもの。


つまり茸の菌糸で、まさにその太さや色など
人毛のそれに近しいものである。もちろん
毎日、シャンプー、リンス、トリートメント
をしてる艶々の香しき美しい髪なんかでなく
ほぼ放置状態でキューティクルのない髪の毛
に近しいもので、ところどころ縮れている。


これは栗の樹木から生えている姿を撮影した
ものである。乾燥に弱いとされる菌類ながら
このものには、外周を取り巻く層が中を保護
しているものである。


樹木、枯葉などの上を人毛の様なものが這い
回っているならば、それは十中八九は菌類、
残りの一ニは山姥の髪の毛かも知れない。

しかし、このネーミングの面白さである。
残念ながら私の持つ菌類図鑑、茸図鑑には
これは一切、掲載されてはいなかったのは
とても残念である。

A "Yamanba" is a supernatural being
that takes on the appearance of an old
woman living deep in the mountains.
When travelers lost in the mountains
seek shelter, the Yamanba provides
lodging and warmly serves meals.
However, once the traveler falls asleep,
the Yamanba reveals its true form and
devours the unsuspecting victim.

Originally believed to be women
abandoned and left behind in snowy
regions or similar harsh environments,
these resentful beings transformed into
vengeful yokai. It's a rather sad reality.

What appears in the photo as "Yamanba's
Hair" is actually a fungus, specifically a
mass of mycorrhizal fungal threads
known as rhizomorphs. These fungal
threads closely resemble human hair
in terms of thickness and color. Unlike
well-maintained, glossy hair that
undergoes daily shampooing, conditioning,
and treatment, this fungal growth is
left mostly untouched, resembling hair
without cuticles and displaying
occasional curls.

The photographed specimen is growing
on a chestnut tree. Despite fungi being
generally sensitive to dry conditions, this particular organism is protected by an
outer layer surrounding its perimeter.

If you come across hair-like structures
crawling on trees, dead leaves, or similar surfaces, chances are it's fungi – with the
slight possibility of it being the hair of a
Yamanba.

The naming of this phenomenon adds
an interesting touch. Unfortunately, my
collection of fungus and mushroom field
guides does not feature this particular
entity, which is quite regrettable.
