姫柊

姫柊 （ヒメヒイラギ）


モチノキ科、モチノキ属の常緑樹。


奄美大島は湯湾岳を原産とするもので
別名を奄美柊（アマミヒイラギ）とも
呼ばれている常緑低木となる。


一般のヒイラギは、モクセイ科なので
全く違う種類の樹木に位置付けられ、
ヒイラギは樹高が４〜８ｍ迄になるが
ヒメヒイラギは２ｍ迄しか成長しない。


葉はヒイラギより小型で長さ２〜３ｃｍ
程度だが、鋭利な棘が突き出ている点で
引けはとらない。


この棘から、邪気や厄を退けてくれる
魔除けとして庭や玄関先などに置かれる
樹木となる。こちらのヒメヒイラギは
盆栽としても人気が高い。

Hime-hiiragi (Japanese Holly)

Belonging to the Loquat family (Eriaceae) in the genus Eriobotrya, this evergreen tree originates from Mt. Yunwan on Amami Oshima. Also known as "Amami Hiiragi," it is a commonly referred to evergreen shrub.

Unlike the general hiiragi, which belongs to the holly family (Aquifoliaceae), and is classified as an entirely different type of tree, Hime-hiiragi grows only up to 2 meters in height, whereas hiiragi can reach 4-8 meters.

The leaves are smaller than those of hiiragi, measuring around 2-3 cm in length, but they have sharp thorns, maintaining their protective quality.

Due to these thorns, it is placed in gardens or near entrances as a charm to ward off evil spirits and misfortune. Hime-hiiragi is also popular as a bonsai.
