節分草

節分草 （セツブンソウ）


キンポウゲ科、セツブンソウ属の多年生の
植物、球根植物。


節分の時期に咲くという事でこの名がついた
訳であるが、関東から以西の広範囲の地域に
分布する植物でもあり、平地や高地の差でも
開花時期はずれる。また、昨今の温暖化傾向
や気候変動もあるので、大まかな解釈にして
おいた方が良いのかも知れない。


セツブンソウの花についての解説だが、以前
にバイカオウレンを紹介した際に、花構造を
解説したのと同じで、セツブンソウも同様で
ある。花弁に見える白い部分は萼片であって
花弁は雄蕊にも見える黄色の粒々なのである。
ここには蜜腺か通っていて、花蜜を求める虫
の為に黄色くなっているのもバイカオウレン
と全く同じである。


これの洋名は『ウィンターアコニット」の名
がつくが、その意味は『冬のトリカブト』と
なる。葉形と模様がとても似ていることから
こんな名前がついているが、実はこの植物も
アルカロイド系の毒性物質アコニチンを含む
ものであり、洋名は毒成分含有を表した名称
として優秀だと私は密かに思っている。


セツブンソウは、『スプリングエフェメラル』
『春の儚い命』と呼ばれている植物に属する。
他には、バイカオウレン、セリバオウレン、
エンゴサク、カタクリなどもこれに属する。

これらの植物は、他の植物達が芽を出す前の
早春に花を咲かせて、夏から秋には枯れて、
地下で養分を蓄え、来春に向けて一年の大半
を地中で球根や地下茎の姿で過ごすのである。


他の植物の葉が繁る前だからこそ、これらの
植物は背が低くても十分に役割を果たす訳で
早期に勝負を賭ける戦略なのだ。


そんなスプリングエフェメラルでありながら
セツブンソウは残念ながら、絶滅危惧種にも
数えられる。地球温暖化などではなく、植物
コレクター等による乱獲が一番の原因なのだ
と言われている。


私も植物マニアのひとりだが、この手が植物
を摘みとる事は一切ない。『私だけ摘む位は
問題ないだろう』なんて考え方は、大いなる
問題であり、それは真に自然を愛するものと
違うものである。

"Setsubunso" refers to a perennial plant in the Ranunculaceae family, Aconitum genus, characterized by bulbous roots. The name is associated with blooming during the Setsubun season, although the plant is distributed widely from the Kanto region to the west, and flowering times vary between lowlands and highlands. Due to recent climate changes and global warming trends, a general interpretation might be more appropriate.

Regarding the flower of Setsubunso, similar to the explanation of Viola grypoceras previously introduced, its structure resembles that of Winter Aconite. The white parts resembling petals are actually sepals, while the yellow granules resembling stamens are part of the male reproductive organs. These contain nectar glands, turning yellow to attract insects seeking nectar, similar to Viola grypoceras.

The English name for this is 'Winter Aconite,' meaning 'Winter Wolf's Bane.' The name is based on the resemblance in leaf shape and patterns to aconitine-containing plants, and I quietly appreciate the Western name accurately reflecting its poisonous nature.

Setsubunso belongs to the category of 'Spring Ephemerals' or 'Transient life in spring.' Other members include Viola grypoceras, Eranthis, Claytonia, and Katakuri. These plants bloom in early spring before other plants sprout, withering from summer to fall, storing nutrients underground and spending most of the year in bulb or rhizome form, preparing for the next spring.

Their low stature doesn't hinder their effectiveness, as they strategically compete early before other plants leaf out.

Despite being a Spring Ephemeral, Setsubunso is unfortunately listed as an endangered species. The primary threat isn't global warming but rather unregulated harvesting by plant collectors. As a fellow plant enthusiast, I refrain from picking plants. The mentality of 'it's okay for me to pick just a few' is a significant issue and differs from a genuine love for nature.
