ヨブズ ティア（JOB'S TEAR）


イネ目、イネ科、ジュズダマ属の植物。


和名では『数珠玉』（ジュズダマ）と呼ばれ
硬い実を糸を通して繋ぎ、数珠状にしたこと
から、この名称が付いている。


タイトルの洋名にある、『JOB'S TEAR』は
「ヨブの涙」と和訳される。ここでの「ヨブ」
とは、旧約聖書に登場する聖書の人物であり
ヨブ記として知られている。ヨブは、物語の
中で神に対する信仰と忍耐を示す人物として
描かれてる人物で、苦難や試練に耐えながら
信仰を守り通す姿勢が特筆されている。


『JOB'S TEAR』「ヨブの涙」という名前は
この種子が「悲しみ」や「試練」を象徴した
ティアドロップ（落ちる涙）のカタチをして
いる事から付いたものとなっていて、由来は
学名の『COIX LACRYMA-JOBI』からきて
いるものである。


仏教の数珠、旧約聖書の涙、と東洋と西洋の
異なる宗教に関連する植物であるが、これの
花言葉は『祈り』となっていてどちらの宗教
にも符合する言葉となっている。
