キジカクシ科、ボウイエア属の球根植物
ビザールプランツのひとつとなる。


英国の植物学者であったジェームス ボウイ
（JAMES BOWIE）、1789–1869。


彼は植物学者としての探究心は珍奇種植物
（ビザールプランツ）へと目を向けられ、
世界中の変わり種植物の収集家としてその
名を馳せたものである。１８世紀といえば
以前にも紹介した通りで、船舶による貿易
が活発化して、世界の距離が縮まった時期。


英国でも世界中の野菜や果実が紹介される
に至り、ウィリアム フッカー等ボタニカル
アートの世界が広がりを見せた時代。


大英博物館も世界の植物に目を向けた時代
となった。ジェームスボウイはキュー王立
庭園任命の後、植物収集の命令が下った。
ここから彼の世界のヘンテコリン植物収集
活動が本格化したのである。その収集範囲
はアフリカ、アジア、インドなど広範囲な
ものとなった。


南アフリカの標高１０００ｍの土地で彼が
見つけたのが、このクライニング オニオン
（CRIMBING ONION）であった。


多年生植物にして、球根植物のこれの形態
は、まさに玉ねぎサイズの球根部の上部に
穴が空いて、そこからスルスルと蔓が伸び
蔓部分が他に巻き付いていく。この植物に
葉はなく、蔓が絡み合う中、緑色の星形花
を多数咲かせるものとなる。そしてこれは
葉を持たない。何とも面白い植物であって
ビザールプランツに相応しい愉快な植物。


ボウイのお気に入りだったからだろう。
この植物の学名には彼の名前が刻まれて
いる。米国人にも同じ名の人物がいるが
別人である。

彼が見つけたこの植物は、三世紀を超え
現在も珍奇種植物として人気の高いもの
なのである。

The bulbous plant belongs to the Liliaceae family, Bowiea genus, and is one of the bizarre plants.

James Bowie, a British botanist (1789–1869), was renowned for his curiosity in peculiar plant species, becoming a collector of unusual plants worldwide during the 18th century when global trade expanded.

In the era when vegetables and fruits from around the world were introduced in the UK, botanical art, including that of William Hooker, flourished.

The British Museum also turned its attention to global plants during James Bowie's tenure at Kew Royal Gardens, where he received orders for plant collection. His eccentric plant collecting activities intensified, spanning across Africa, Asia, and India.

In the high-altitude lands of South Africa at 1000m, he discovered the Crimbing Onion, a perennial bulbous plant with a fascinating structure resembling an onion, featuring tendrils extending from holes in the upper part of the bulb, intertwining and producing numerous green star-shaped flowers without leaves.

This peculiar and delightful plant was a favorite of Bowie, evident in its scientific name bearing his mark, despite there being another person with the same name in the United States who is a different individual.

The plant he discovered has surpassed three centuries and remains highly popular as an exotic species even today.
