〜込む（こむ）

Adding "込む" after a verb in Japanese can change its meaning in various ways.

・It can mean to enter or put something into something.

彼女はそれまでの仕事を辞めて、未経験の業界に飛び込んだ。
かのじょはそれまでのしごとをやめて、みけいけんのぎょうかいにとびこんだ。
She quit her previous job and plunged into an industry she had no experience in.

この薬は噛まずに飲み込んでください。
このくすりはかまずにのみこんでください。
Please swallow this medicine without chewing.

・It can indicate that a certain state continues.

彼は質問されて、答えがわからず黙り込んでしまった。
かれはしつもんされて、こたえがわからずだまりこんでしまった。
He was asked a question and, not knowing the answer, fell silent.

彼女は新しいアイディアが思いつかず、ずっと考え込んでいる。
かのじょはあたらしいあいでぃあがおもいつかず、ずっとかんがえこんでいる。
She is deeply engrossed in thought, unable to come up with a new idea.

・It can mean to become completely in a certain state.

この時期は朝晩は冷え込むので、暖かい服装を準備してください。
このじきはあさばんはひえこむので、あたたかいふくそうをじゅんびしてください。
During this season, mornings and evenings get very cold, so please prepare warm clothing.

彼女は夫を亡くしてから、すっかり老けこんでしまった。
かのじょはおっとをなくしてから、すっかりふけこんでしまった。

She has aged significantly since the loss of her husband.

・It can mean to do something thoroughly.

このスープは6時間煮込みました。
このすーぷは6じかんにこみました。
This soup has been simmered for six hours.

彼女は愛犬に1ヶ月かけて様々な芸を教え込んだ。
かのじょはあいけんに1かげつかけてさまざまなげいをおしえこんだ。
She spent a month thoroughly training her dog in various tricks.
