〜ぶる

“〜ぶる” is an expression used to describe taking on an attitude or behavior that is not actually true to one's nature.

彼は上司の前では真面目ぶっているが、上司がいないところでは仕事を怠けている。
かれはじょうしのまえではまじめぶっているが、じょうしがいないところではしごとをなまけている。
He acts serious in front of his boss, but slacks off when the boss is not around.

彼女は人前では上品ぶっているが、自宅で一人でいる時はとてもだらしない格好をしている。
かのじょはひとまえではじょうひんぶっているが、じたくでひとりでいるときはとてもだらしないかっこうをしている。
She pretends to be elegant in front of others, but dresses very sloppily when alone at home.

Additionally, it is used to describe the attitude of excessively emphasizing one's position or role.

彼は入社してまだ3年目なのに、新入社員に対して先輩ぶって説教をしていた。
かれはにゅうしゃしてまだ3ねんめなのに、しんにゅうしゃしんにたいしてせんぱいぶってせっきょうをしていた。
Despite being only in his third year with the company, he lectures the new employees as if he were a senior.

彼女はモデル事務所に入ったばかりなのに、有名モデルぶって出歩く際にサングラスをかけている。
かのじょはもでるじむしょにはいったばかりなのに、ゆうめいもでるぶってであるくさいにさんぐらすをかけている。
Even though she just joined a modeling agency, she wears sunglasses when going out, acting like a famous model.

Furthermore, “勿体ぶる (もったいぶる)” is a verb meaning to behave as though what one has, knows, or can do is more important than it actually is.

彼は骨董品の茶碗を持っていると言うが、勿体ぶって我々には見せようとしない。
かれはこっとうひんのちゃわんをもっているというが、もったいぶってわれわれにはみせようとしない。
He claims to have an antique tea bowl but refuses to show it to us, acting all important.

彼女はそのステージの攻略方法を知っているが、勿体ぶって友達に教えようとしない。
かのじょはそのすてーじのこうりゃくほうほうをしっているが、もったいぶってともだちにおしえようとしない。
She knows how to clear that stage but won't tell her friends, acting as if it's a big secret.
