Contact Collaborative Community Development Department's Collaboration Promotion Section ☎ 024-575-1177

The Letter of Appointment has been presented to the new Date City CIR from the United States, Yvonne Takahashi.
She will be collaborating with our other CIR, Cameron, in order to create an environment where citizens can interact with and become more familiar with English. This includes English activities and lessons with children as well as English classes.
In addition, she will also be conducting Japanese classes for foreign residents, translating government information and other work to support a multicultural community.
A message from Yvonne to the city residents:
Hi. I’m Yvonne Takahashi. I have had many experiences in Japan, but it’s my first time to be here in the Tohoku region.
To be honest, my own American identity feels a little rough as I made every effort to pump Japanese culture and language into my children during our time in the states. I’m eager to use this new role of Coordinator of International Relations to revisit what exactly it means to be American and what American culture looks like.
I’ll be here in Date with my family. If you see us out and about, we’ll be so happy to meet and talk with you!

Sending Summer Off with a Bang

Similarly to Japan, in America we also set off fireworks during the summer months. The biggest firework show near my hometown is held as the final event of a festival called Riverfest. Riverfest is an event held on Labor Day, a holiday in early September and marks the end of summer. The event is held all-day in various places around the Ohio River in the Cincinnati area, just a 10 minute drive from my hometown. During the day it is much like a festival in Japan, with food trucks and shops, games and activities, and live music.

As I mentioned before however, the main event is the firework show, presented by a local radio station. The fireworks generally last for 30 minutes and are set off from a bridge over the Ohio River, and are accompanied by a rock music soundtrack procured by the local radio station. Something I always enjoyed about this event was the places we are able to view the fireworks from. Multiple of the nearby highways are shut down and people gather on them to get a good view of the fireworks. However, the best way to view them is on the river itself. There are designated areas on the river that those with boats may anchor at and enjoy the fireworks as close as possible.

While I am sad that it signifies the end of summer, I always enjoyed watching the fireworks with my family. I look forward to enjoying fireworks in Date and all over Japan during my time here and am excited to see the differences between America and Japan, as well as between different regions in Japan!
