School’s Out for Summer

We are now into June, meaning for kids all across America, summer vacation has begun. The length of summer vacation in America may come as a shock for Japanese people as it lasts roughly 11 weeks spanning across all of June and July, and partially May and August. While every kid looks forward to this long break from school, I’ll admit that when I was a kid, I began looking forward to school as the vacation came to a close.

However, summer vacation itself was not the only thing I looked forward to. When I was in elementary school, the last few days of school before summer vacation were reserved for field trips and other fun activities, which I enjoyed each year. These would include trips one of the local parks, where we would enjoy playing outside and on a warm late spring day, and trips to the local bowling alley and roller rink which was usually accompanied by a pizza party. A seemingly mundane highlight was always eating lunch outside at the park which just seemed to taste better when separated from the usual cafeteria environment we had lunch in.

Sadly, the end-of-year fun ended in middle school and stayed that way throughout most of high school as the end of these school years were marked with final exams. Thankfully, this lack of end-of-year fun was made up for in my senior year of high school when we had multiple fun events at school. This includes senior day where we got to spend a day at our elementary school. There we visited our old teachers, ate lunch at the cafeteria, and played kickball against the fifth graders, something I have been looking forward to since I was a fifth grader myself. On the last day of school there was a cookout and water balloon fight for seniors.

These are just a few differences between American and Japanese high schools and I look forward to experiencing and sharing even more cultural differences during my time here in Date City!
