To prevent waterpipes from freezing
The low temperature is predicted to drop down to -6℃ from tonight. In this season, this condition happens often. Our area doesn't get cold like Hokkaido or Tohoku area, but we really need to be careful to prevent the waterpipes from freezing.
We usually keep running the water from all the pipes in the house all night. They will be sinks of the kitchen and bathroom, the pipe of the bathtub, and the pipe connected to the washing machine. If it gets more colder, we also keep the toilet's water running.
One winter when I first experienced this weather, it got so cold that the running water became an icicle. It happened at the sink of the bathroom. After it got warmer, the pipe broke and the water overflowed at the floor. At this time, I heard afterwards that the temperature dropped down suddenly to below -10℃ or more.
We don't want this kind of incident to happen again. It's difficult to avoid it, if it gets colder than we have expected. However, we will try the best we can do.
