TOEFL iBT のリーディング問題②　－Desert Formation－

ほい、というわけでTOEFLの演習／解説の実況中継の２回目、The Official Guide to the TOEFL Test Fourth Editionの PRACTICE SET 2 のパッセージ、DESERT FORMATIONに取り組んでみたいと思う。出題傾向や解法についてはTOEFL iBT のリーディング問題について①を参照のこと。

DESERT FORMATION

1. The word “threatened” in the passage is closest in meaning to

語彙問題、つまりほとんどボーナス問題。threat ＝脅威に、接尾辞enがついて動詞になっている。似たようなものにworsen, weaken, strengthen, brighten, darkenなどがある。選択肢中ではendangeredが正解。これは接頭辞enがついてdangerが動詞化している。同じようなものにenjoy, encourage, enclose, enrichなどがある。

2. According to paragraph 3, the loss of natural vegetation has which of the following consequences for soil?

第３パラグラフにはキーワード、逆接、例示が出てこないので、これは自力で丹念に読み解くしかない。TOEFLでもIELTSでも、設問中の内容語はパッセージ中の内容語からは100％と言っていいほど、言い換えられている。問題となっているのは the loss of natural vegetation なので、これのパラフレーズを自分でやってみる。loss → deprivation, reduction, disappearanceが思い浮かぶ。これらを念頭にパラグラフを読むと、さっそく第１センテンスに、the reduction of vegetation typically results in the loss of the soil’s ability to absorb substantial quantities of water. とあり、the loss of natural vegetation ≒ the reduction of vegetation ということから、答えは the loss of the soil’s ability to absorb substantial quantities of water ≒ Reduced water absorption となる。

3. The word “delicate” in the passage is closest in meaning to

デリケートというのは日本語になっている。選択肢のfragileを見た瞬間に「これだ！」と思えなければ、TOEFL対策を始めていい段階にすら至っていない。

4. According to paragraph 5, in dry periods, border areas have difficulty

第５パラグラフにも注目すべき点はいくつかあるが、一番最初に目につくのは、第１センテンスのhowever以降、つまり desertifcation in most areas results primarily from human activities rather than natural processes. だろう。だが、dry periods や border areas には言及していない。読み進めると段落最後のセンテンスに逆接の though があり、その後半は the pressure on the land is often far in excess of its diminished capacity, and desertification results. とあり、キーワードの desertification も登場する。土地へのプレッシャーが往々にして、土地のキャパを超えてしまい、結果として砂漠化する、の意。土地にかかるストレスにアジャストできないという意味の、adjusting to stresses created by settlement が正解。

5. The word “progressively” in the passage is closest in meaning to

progress の proは「（空間的な意味で）前」の意。gressはラテン語の gradior = 歩く、進む。最も近い意味は increasingly。間違っても字面が似ているだけの impressively を選ぶことがあってはならない。

6. According to paragraph 6, which of the following is often associated with raising crops?

第６パラグラフにはキーワードである desert や desertification はあるが、逆接や例示はなく、濃淡があまりない。こういう時も設問の内容語にフォーカスして、地道にパッセージを当たるのみ。associated with raising crops ＝ 作物を育てるのに関連する、と類似の表現を探すと、パラグラフ最後のセンテンスに、Since the raising of most crops ～ とある。たいての作物の生育はその前の自然の植生の除去を必要とする、ということから正解は Removal of the original vegetation と判断できる。

7. The phrase “devoid of” in the passage is closest in meaning to

devoid of ～ ＝ ～を欠いている、というのはTOEFL iBTの目標スコアが80点なら知っておくべき。仮に知らないとしても、crop failures leave extensive tracts of land devoid of a plant cover から意味を類推できなければ、パッセージの趣旨＝砂漠化を理解できていないことになる。

8. According to paragraph 9, the ground’s absorption of excess water is a factor in desertification because it can

キーワードの desertification を含む第１センテンスに、The final major human cause of desertification is soil salinization resulting from overirrigation. とある。土壌の塩化である。ここから bring salts to the surface が正解であるとわかる。仮に salinization が何であるかが分からなくとも、丹念にパラグラフを読めば分かるはず。文脈から意味を類推できないならば、TOEFL ITP500点レベルの教材からやり直しである。

9. All of the following are mentioned in the passage as contributing to desertification EXCEPT

in the passageとあるが、騙されてはいけない。実質、第９パラグラフだけ読んで解ける問題。キーワードの desertification を含む第１センテンス、 The final major human cause of desertification is soil salinization resulting from overirrigation. を思い起こすべし。overirrigation が土壌の塩化につながると述べられている。つまり、選択肢の insufficient irrigation は明らかに間違いで、すなわちこれこそが砂漠化の要員として言及されていないものとなる。

10. Which of the sentences below best expresses the essential information in the highlighted sentence in the passage? Incorrect choices change the meaning in important ways or leave out essential information.

The extreme seriousness of desertification results from the vast areas of land and the tremendous numbers of people affected, as well as from the great difficulty of reversing or even slowing the process. と同じ意味になるセンテンスを選べというもの。簡単に訳せば、砂漠化の深刻さは、影響を受ける人間の数の多さと土地の広大さにあるだけでなく、そのプロセスを反転させたり、あるいは遅らせることさえ難しいということにもある、ということ。これと本質的に同じことを述べているのは、一番最初の選択肢＝Desertification is a significant problem because it is so hard to reverse and affects large areas of land and great
numbers of people. しかない。英検準１級合格レベルなら、言い換え問題は得点源にしたいところ。

11. It can be inferred from the passage that the author most likely believes which of the following about the future of desertification?

ややトリッキーな問題。逆接の though 以後に注目すれば、土地保護プログラムと植樹によって現在の地表の劣化を反転させることができるかもしれない、とある。しかし、これに近い選択肢はない。Governments will act quickly ～ を選びたくなるかもしれないが、どこにも自治体や各国政府への言及はない。そこでもう一度パッセージを、キーワードを軸にスキミングする。第１パラグラフの最初の文に「砂漠は地球表面の４分の１」、「過去数十年で増加中」とあることから、Desertification will continue to increase. に落ち着く。

12. Look at the four squares [■] that indicate where the following sentence can be added to the passage.

This economic reliance on livestock in certain regions makes large tracts of land susceptible to overgrazing.

Where would the sentence best fit?

これも簡単。This があるから。ここでは This は形容詞として機能しており、This = economic growth であることが分かる。つまり、この文章の直前に「経済成長」が述べられていればいい。The raising of livestock is a major economic activity ～ という文章が直前にある２つ目の選択肢が正解。

13. Directions: An introductory sentence for a brief summary of the passage is provided below. Complete the summary by selecting the THREE answer choices that express the most important ideas in the passage. Some answer choices do not belong in the summary because they express ideas that are not presented in the passage or are minor ideas in the
passage. This question is worth 2 points.

Many factors have contributed to the great increase in desertification in recent decades.

これに続くセンテンス３つを選んでパッセージ全体のサマリーを完成させる問題。〇✖△メソッドを使おう。

1. Growing human populations and the agricultural demands that come with such growth have upset the ecological balance in some areas and led to the spread of deserts.

the spread of deserts というキーワードを発見、〇とする。

2. As periods of severe dryness have become more common, failures of a number of different crops have increased.

砂漠に関する言及なし。✖とする。

3. Excessive numbers of cattle and the need for firewood for fuel have reduced grasses and trees, leaving the land unprotected and vulnerable.

砂漠に関する言及はないが、cattleやfirewoodといった砂漠化の要因４つのうちの２つがある。また reduced grasses and trees, leaving the land unprotected and vulnerable は砂漠化の前兆。△とする。

4. Extensive irrigation with poor drainage brings salt to the surface of the soil, a process that reduces water and air absorption.

irrigation は overirrigation という形で砂漠化の原因として言及されていたので、△とする。

5. Animal dung enriches the soil by providing nutrients for plant growth.

desert への言及なし、✖とする。

6. Grasses are generally the dominant type of natural vegetation in semiarid lands.

desert への言及なし、✖とする。

以上より、１＝〇、２＝✖、３＝△、４＝△、５＝✖、６＝✖となり、１、３、４を選択する。実際に１、３、４が正解である。

今回のパッセージは少しトリッキー。パラグラフ４つを読ませたところで、第５パラグラフでいきなり、There is little doubt, however, that desertification in most areas results primarily from human activities rather than natural processes. という具合に、それまで読んだ内容をいきなりひっくり返してくるので。しかし、この転換をしっかり頭にいれておけば、第５パラグラフでFour specific activities have been identified as major contributors to the desertification process: overcultivation, overgrazing, firewood gathering, and overirrigation. というキーセンテンスの重要さを見落とすことはない。
