ガールズリーダーシップの必要性

コネクトシスターズの代表のメンターとして、プログラムをサポートしてくださっているブレンダ教授は、聖心女子大学でリーダーシッププログラムを教えていらっしゃいました。ここでは、ブレンダ教授に若い女の子がリーダーシッププログラムを受講することの大切さとコネクトシスターズのプログラムについてインタビューをしています。※英語インタビュー原文は日本語訳の後に記載しています。

CS:自己紹介をしていただけますか？
ブレンダ教授：
こんにちは！ 私の名前はブレンダ・ブシェルです。
カナダ出身で、25年以上日本に住んでいます。
これまでに、私は日本の大学で、教職や研究職についています。また、日本、ネパール、ウガンダでリーダーシッププログラムとワークショップを開発・実施してきました。

CS:教授はSacred Heart大学でリーダーシッププログラムを始められたと伺っています。若い女性がリーダーシップを学ぶことが重要だと思う理由を教えてください。
ブレンダ教授：
若い女性のためのリーダーシッププログラムは、彼女たちが強い自己意識を生み出し、自分の意見やアイデアを積極的に声に出すよう促していくため、重要です。リーダーシッププログラムを通じて、若い女性は自分たちの強みを把握し、それを引き伸ばします。
調査によると、女の子のリーダーシッププログラムは、性別による役割への期待の影響を減らし、自信を高め、将来のキャリアの選択肢を広げるのに役立つと言われています。また、リーダーシッププログラムは、女の子がお互いを信頼し、尊重することを学ぶので、優れたコミュニケーションスキルと人間関係を構築するのにも役立ちます。これは、女の子が他の女の子によるいじめの犠牲になることもある現代の世界では重要です。
良好なコミュニケーション、自発性、問題解決、他人への思いやりなどのリーダーシップスキルを早い段階から育成することは、若い女性が将来の目標を追求するときに、重要な影響を与えることもあります。
若い女性の成長とエンパワーメントを支援することで、すべての人の生活の質を高めることができると、私は信じています。

CS:コネクトシスターズプログラムについてどう思いますか？
ブレンダ教授：
コネクトシスターズプログラムは、若い女性にとって素晴らしいプログラムです！
自信を持って話す、他の人の話を聞く、共同プロジェクトの作業、創造的かつ批判的に考えるなど、今重要であるリーダーシップスキルが組み込まれています。
このプログラムで私が最も気に入っていることの1つは、Big Sisterによるメンターシップです。女子大生、さまざまなキャリアを持つ若い女性が、プログラム中に女の子をメンターとしてサポートします。
また、COVID-19のパンデミックによりオンラインで開催されているため、海外からの女の子も参加でき、参加者間の多様でダイナミックな交流ができていると思います。

CS:コネクトシスターズを指導することにした理由は何ですか？
ブレンダ教授：
プログラムの創設者であるWakiのために、コネクトシスターズを指導することにしました。Wakiは、女の子の自信を高め、リーダーシップスキルを伸ばす方法を模索するのを支援することに情熱を注いでいます。
彼女は、プログラム全体を通して、それぞれの女の子のニーズを考えながら、毎年、新鮮で楽しいプログラムを維持しながら、プログラムの研究と開発に多大な努力を続けています。
彼女はプログラムに対する確固たるビジョンを持っており、リーダーとして、価値のあるプログラムを作成することの重要性を知っています。
私は、Wakiがしていることに本当に感心し、彼女のプログラムをサポートし続けることを楽しみにしています。

CS:若い女性が、コネクトシスターズのプログラムを受講することは有益だと思いますか？はいの場合、なぜですか？いいえの場合、なぜですか？
ブレンダ教授：
コネクトシスターズプログラムは、強いリーダーになるために必要なスキルを教えるプログラムが男の子を中心としていることが多いため、若い女性にとって非常に有益です。
日本では、幼い頃の女の子は依然として伝統的な性別の役割の影響を受けており、女性のリーダーの役割モデルがほとんどないため、若い女性がリーダーシップを伴うキャリアパスを持っていると想像することは困難です。
コネクトシスターズプログラムを通じて、若い女性は自分たちをリーダーと見なすのに役立つスキルと能力を身に付けることができます。
このプログラムはまた、彼女たちがより少ないストレスで自分たちのの生活を管理し、ナビゲートすることを学ぶことができるように、ジェンダーバイアスを理解するのを助けます。

CS:最後にコネクトシスターズに何を望むか教えて下さい。
ブレンダ教授：
今後、コネクトシスターズプログラムに参加する若い女性が増え、日本で認められた教育プログラムになることを願っています。
また、プログラムが発展するにつれて、最も支援を必要としている日本の社会的に脆弱な少女や女性に手を差し伸べることができることを願っています。
リーダーシップは、彼女たちが直面する複雑な問題に対処し、できればいつか彼女たちの生活をより良いものに変えるスキルです。
コネクトシスターズは、将来的に多くの女の子と女性にプラスの影響を与えるポテンシャルを持っています。

Could you please introduce yourself?
Hello! My name is Brenda Bushell.
Originally from Canada, I’ve been living in Japan for more than 25 years. 
During this time I have held teaching and research positions at several Japanese universities, and have developed and conducted leadership programs and workshops in Japan, Nepal and Uganda.  
I understand that you started a leadership program at the University of Sacred Heart. 
Could you tell us why you think it is important for young women to learn leadership?
Leadership programs for young women are important because they build a stronger sense of self and encourage young women to voice their opinions and ideas. 

Through leadership programs, young women begin to recognize and build on their strengths. 

Studies inform us that girls’ leadership programs help to reduce the impact of gender role expectations, increase self-confidence, and broaden career options later in life. 

Leadership programs can also help to build good communication skills and strong relationships among girls, as they learn to trust and respect one another. 

This is important in a world where girls can become victims of bullying by other girls. 

Fostering leadership skills such as good communication, self-motivation, problem-solving, and care for others at an early age can have a meaningful impact for young women as they pursue their future goals. 

I believe that when we support the growth and empowerment of young women, we raise the quality of life for everyone.
What do you think about the ConnectSisters program?
The ConnectSisters program is a fantastic program for young women!
 
It incorporates the leadership skills that are important today, such as speaking confidently, listening to others, cooperative project work, thinking creatively and critically, and much more. 

One of the things I like best about the program is the Big Sister mentorship component: female university students, and young women in various career tracks, mentor and support the girls during the program. 

And because the program has been held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, girls from outside Japan can also join, making for a more diverse and dynamic interaction among the participants. 
What made you decide to mentor ConnectSisters?
I decided to mentor ConnectSisters because of Waki ….?, the program founder. 

Waki is passionate about boosting girls’ confidence and helping them explore ways that they can develop their leadership skills.  

She continues to put in great effort to research and develop the program, keeping it fresh and fun each year, while thinking about each girl’s needs throughout the program.  

She has a solid vision for the program, and as a leader herself, she knows the importance of creating a valuable program. 

I really admire what Waki is doing and look forward to continuing to support her program. 
Do you think it is beneficial for young women to take ConnectSisters’ program? If yes, why? If no, why not?
The ConnectSisters program is very beneficial for young women because oftentimes programs that teach the skills needed to be a strong leader are centered on boys. 

In Japan, girls at an early age are still often influenced by traditional gender roles, and have few female leader role models, so it’s difficult for young women to imagine themselves as having a career path that involves leadership. 

Through the ConnectSisters program, young women can gain skills and competencies which help them see themselves as leaders. 

The program also helps them to understand gender bias so that they can learn to manage and navigate their lives with less stress. 
What do  you wish for ConnectSisters?
I wish that more and more young women will join the ConnectSisters programs in the coming years, and that it becomes a recognized educational program in Japan. 

I also hope that as the program evolves it can reach out to more socially vulnerable girls and women in Japan who need support the most. 

Leadership is a skill-set that can address the complex problems they face, and hopefully one day, turn their lives around. 

ConnectSisters has the potential to positively impact many girls and women in the future.
