Sacred Heart Church :

Sacred Heart Parish is a Jesuit-administered Roman Catholic Personal Parish for the Chinese-Filipino Community of Cebu, with Territorial Jurisdiction. It has recently been decreed as the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, by his Excellency, Jose Palma, D.D., Metropolitan Archbishop of Cebu.

Originally dedicated to Our Lady Queen of China, Sacred Heart Parish - Jesuit was founded in 1952. A group of zealous Chinese Catholics in Cebu City, Philippines, with the permission of the Archbishop of Cebu, requested Rev. Fr. Paul O'Brien, S.J., then Superior of the Jesuits of the China Mission, for a Jesuit priest to minister to their pastoral needs.

The community managed to renovate the ground floor of the Convento of Cebu Cathedral and turned it into a chapel where Masses for the Cebuano Chinese were offered.

Soon, a co-educational school was established at the Mabini-Manalili area, not far from the Cathedral. Fr. Francisco Heras, S.J., also expelled by Communist China, became the first director of Sacred Heart School for Boys (now Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu).

The church was completed in record time to celebrate its first Mass on Christmas Eve of 1960. This is the SACRED HEART CHURCH - JESUIT that we see today.
