新潟市歴史巡り: 願随寺
Niigata was named one of 5 Japanese ports to open to international trade per the 1858 Treaty of Amity and Commerce.
The following year the Edo Shogunate informed its representatives in Niigata to expect a visit by the Dutch (one of the 5 foreign signatories) and to locate a suitable site to host the visiting emissaries.
Ganzui Temple was selected for its size and proximity to the port.
As it happened, a Russian vessel, the Ringitt, called in Niigata that year, with the Dutch visiting in 1860.
