Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party released the following joint statement regarding the sentencing of two prominent Chinese human rights lawyers by the Chinese Communist Party. The two lawyers, Xu Zhiyong and Ding Jiaxi, were sentenced to 14 and 12 years in prison, respectively, for civil activism after organizing a peaceful gathering of about 20 lawyers and activists in 2019, where they discussed exercising the right of free speech in China.
“Xu Zhiyong and Ding Jiaxi deserve to be free, and their voices deserve to be heard. The international community should come together to demand their release, and we must always shine a bright light on the continued attacks on basic human rights by the CCP.”
