The mask that the character of "Bansai Channel" possesses. In fact, this mask hides a certain secret. It is something that governs important memories for Bansai, and at the same time, it holds a secret related to him. To understand this, we first need to talk about his upbringing.
The beginning of the story
There is a place somewhere different from the world we live in. There are several worlds that are similar yet somewhat different. This story is set in a place that is a bit like ours among the many worlds.
The inhabitants of that world resembled human beings in appearance, but they had a look similar to what we would call 'rabbits' in our world. They had the intellect of primates and rabbit-like ears.
They had very timid personalities, but their level of civilization was incomparable to the current Earth. The only remaining challenge for their civilization was the supply of energy, which troubled them. Sustaining such an extensive civilization required an equivalent amount of energy.
They devised a technology that harnessed the power of their own characteristics to generate energy through emotions. They later created life forms with large hearts, known as 'Bio-Batteries,' and constructed domes at the heart of their city. The energy generation from emotional outbursts was hailed as a clean invention that didn't disrupt the natural ecosystem.
They harnessed emotions like love, joy, laughter, and gratitude, causing emotional outbursts, and connected the resulting energy to various power sources. As a result, their civilization obtained what could be considered an eternal source of energy, and further development was anticipated. This enormous heart, along with a massive body that could be likened to a giant, marked the beginning of the individual later known as Binbou Bansai, the impoverished one.
In anticipation of the growth into a massive body, a large dome was constructed at the center of the city. Inside it, the source of life, which marked the beginning of the bio-batteries, was created. The artificially created fertilized egg was many times larger than an adult. The dark dome served as the placenta, and all knowledge was infused into that sphere.
After a long period, the eagerly awaited life emerged as the shell melted away. It appeared as an infant, no different from any other creature. They invested more time in the gradual growth of this infant. They nurtured it with care and affection in a secure, dark room, much like their own child. However, it also meant not granting freedom.
In addition to nourishing their knowledge, great emphasis was placed on fostering the emotions that would serve as the core of the bio-batteries. A female scientist, representing a motherly figure, played a crucial role in shaping their self-awareness. The giant infant adored the small mother figure until it became self-aware. Even though it didn't understand the meaning, it loved to be read picture books by the mother figure. This interaction served as a rehearsal for the mother figure as well.
Years passed, and the bio-battery had grown into a full-fledged adult. Nurtured with love, it had maintained its pure, obedient, and well-behaved nature while retaining its massive body. Even though confined within the dark dome, it understood and accepted its purpose. The experiments to generate energy based on emotions were also progressing smoothly.
By this time, there was a child who would dart around the adult bio-battery. She was the scientist's daughter who had taken on a motherly role. Several years had passed since she had her own child. The energetic daughter was fascinated by the bio-battery with its massive body. She would run around the bio-battery, ignoring her mother's instructions and even playing with it late at night. The bio-battery couldn't help but feel joy despite having to advise her sister.
The interaction between the scientist's daughter and the bio-battery mutually encouraged their growth. The bio-battery, unable to move from its spot, learned about the outside world and emotions through the daughter. In return, the daughter would confide her homework troubles and family complaints to the bio-battery. Though she had a bit of a sharp tongue, thanks to her, the bio-battery felt the love of a family. The scientists were surprised by the gradual increase in energy efficiency, but once they learned about the interaction with the daughter, they agreed to have official contact.
One day, the bio-battery noticed a bruise on the daughter's face. This was around the time when she had started coming to visit less frequently. When the bio-battery inquired about the cause of the bruise, the daughter pretended to remain calm, saying she had just fallen and gotten hurt, and then she quickly left. The bio-battery realized that the bruise wasn't the result of an accident, but it had no way to confirm it. Later, the scientists overheard whispers that the daughter's parents had divorced in hushed tones, and since then, the relationship between the daughter and her parents hadn't been going well.
The scientists were troubled. The bio-battery, which had been efficiently generating energy until now, had seen a drastic drop in energy production. They knew the cause was their daughter, but they were at a loss as they couldn't forcibly take her away. Since they had entrusted most of the city's power generation to the bio-battery, the city was frequently plagued by blackouts.
The performance of the bio-battery had deteriorated to the point where it couldn't fully restore the old energy sources. The daughter never showed up, and the bio-battery had grown weaker. While other scientists and their families came in place of the daughter, they couldn't alleviate the bio-battery's anxiety and loneliness. Eventually, the bio-battery's spirit withered, and it went into a dormant state. When it closed its eyes, it found itself in an endless expanse of swirling darkness.
The slumber of the bio-battery was disrupted by a piercing scream. When the bio-battery, still partially unconscious, opened its eyes, it witnessed a scene of the scientist and his daughter arguing. Their anger and sadness had reached a boiling point, and they were gradually getting into a physical confrontation. The place where the bio-battery was sleeping was in a high location, and in its blurry field of vision, it saw the daughter passing by.
At the feet of the bio-battery, a small red flower had bloomed. In its groggy state, the bio-battery didn't yet understand what it was. A previously unheard, piercing scream jolted its half-awake mind. As the petals fully unfurled, it recognized what it was, and an uncontrollable surge of emotions erupted from the depths of its heart.
An explosion of emotions like never before. Negative emotions pushed the bio-battery beyond comprehension, and the boundless energy that overflowed began to erase everything. The shock rippled through all that had been cultivated - civilizations, their histories, unexplored stars, and the yet unseen ends of the universe.
On this day, one of the many worlds completely disappeared. All that was left was a small light called the bio-battery. It flickers in the endless darkness, all alone. There are no more voices to be heard. Instead, only the sorrowful voice of the bio-battery softly echoed.
Long, long time passed. In the darkness, the bio-battery remained alone, surrendering to the flow of time that could be called eternal. Throughout that time, it was constantly plagued by regret and self-blame.
As time passed, the bio-battery, whose heart had been worn down, began to split its own heart like a defense mechanism. One part contained positive emotions such as joy and affection, the very feelings of positivity it had dreamt of. The other part contained negative emotions like sadness and anger, the emotions of negativity it had imagined. Eventually, these divided hearts started to take on the colors of good and evil.
On the other hand, the bio-battery yearned to be liberated from this darkness. Having lived a lifetime without freedom since its birth, this desire grew deeper and deeper in its heart as time passed. Eventually, it took shape between the positive and negative emotions, becoming an undetermined will not bound by either. And from this, a unique identity, a gender that would later become female, emerged.
By the time the three intentions had swelled, a rift appeared in the world of darkness, and light pierced through for the first time. In that instant, the intentions of evil and freedom spontaneously leaped into the light beyond. However, the remaining intention of good stayed in the world of darkness. This was because there was no longer any resistance or hope left within itself. Only regret and sorrow remained.
There was a figure that approached the intention of good, the last remaining entity at the core of the bio-battery. They were beings who monitored numerous worlds. Since the extinction of one world until today, they had been observing this darkness. Normally, beings responsible for causing the extinction of a world were seen as a threat and destined to be sealed to prevent them from affecting other worlds. However, one of the visitors questioned the bio-battery.
What do you want to do from now on? Your desired wishes seem to have vanished," the bio-battery said. "I don't know. I can't change what I've done, and my heart still feels like it's going to burst," the visitor replied. "If you regret your past mistakes, shouldn't you make amends?" The bio-battery agreed with that sentiment. "If you wish, I can give you a body to make amends." When the visitor's hand touched the bio-battery's light, the light gradually converged at the center and formed a human figure.
Memento Mori: The world's memento
In the darkness, there remained a faint remnant of life. When the visitor collected the light, smaller than a speck of dust, it eventually shimmered like a star and turned into a single mask. This mask took the form of the bones of the inhabitants who had created the bio-battery, and the visitor advised the bio-battery to keep the mask as a reminder of the past. The bio-battery accepted the mask and was finally able to escape from this world of darkness.
From then on, the bio-battery, now known as Binbou Bansai, wore a blue robe and intervened in various worlds, striving to perform as many good deeds as possible. In fact, there is a prelude to this story, in which Binbou Bansai, once nameless, had his heart and body trained by an old woman at the cost of his life. So, how did he come to be known as Binbou Bansai? That's a tale for another time."
