iPhone 16 Pro Cameras: New Button, Better Wide Angle and 4K Slow Motion

Apple has just taken the wraps off the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro range at its Glowtime launch event, which includes a new processor, new colors and a whole host of Apple Intelligence features. The phone gets a variety of camera upgrades, including a faster main camera, improved ultrawide, higher-quality slow motion and a new physical camera control button.

The main camera retains its 48 megapixel resolution but Apple promises a faster readout from the sensor, reducing the lag between hitting the shutter and taking the photo. The result? Snappier images when you're taking photos of fast-moving subjects. The ultrawide camera has been bumped from 12 megapixels to 48 megapixels providing a ton more detail for wide landscapes or when using the wide lens for close-up macro shots.

Both the iPhone 16 Pro and base iPhone 16 models get a new physical camera button that gives the phones the sort of handling you'd normally get from a regular camera. The new camera control button sits flush on the side of the phone. One click will open the camera and you can click again to take a photo or click and hold to record video. It can recognize half presses. A light press brings up functions like zoom, allowing you to slide your finger to the side to zoom in.
Video has seen a big boost too, with the iPhone 16 Pro now supporting 120 frames per second video capture at 4K resolution. It could previously only manage this at 1080p, which made it unfeasible for more professional productions.

The base iPhone 16 received camera updates too, including the camera control button, a 48 megapixel main camera, 12 megapixel ultrawide camera with improved low-light shooting and a vertical layout for the two rear cameras.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max proved to be one of the best phone cameras around, taking not just great images with its 5x optical zoom lens, but also being capable of capturing pro-standard video footage thanks to its ProRes video codec.

Apple launched the iPhone 16 range alongside the new Apple Watch Series 10 and new AirPods.
