日本では、木炭をどのように分類してきたのか？（木炭分類学）
木炭の炭種＝樹種×産地×製炭方法となるため、日本で製炭される木炭の種類は「炭質としては無数に存在する」とも言えます。
日本ではその多量の炭種を分類するために、まず「炭窯を使って製炭したものか（連続的製炭）、そうでないか（単発的製炭）」で大きく分類しました。
次に、炭窯を使って製炭したものを「消火場所」によって分類し、窯の中で消火したものを黒炭、窯の外で消火したものを白炭と定義しました。
そのため「白炭」「黒炭」という字句は日本が生み出した特有の言葉で、国家として日本以外でこの定義をして使い分けてきた国はありません。
一見すると全体像が見えにくいですが、図解すると非常に単純になるので理解しやすく、記憶にも定着しやすいと思います。
今のところこの関係性を図解したものはネット上にありませんので、ぜひこの動画内の図解を活用なり、改良して自由に使っていただければと思います( 2024.01.19 )
いつからこの言葉があるのか？
・”白炭、黒炭は日本だけの言葉で、世界にはこのような炭の区別はない”
・”現在、わがくにで使われている黒炭という字句は藩政時代以前には使われていない”
・”明治期に窯外消火法による木炭を白炭、窯内消火法による木炭を黒炭と定義してから以後、黒炭ということばが一般に使われるようになった。黒炭ということばは、炭の長い歴史の上ではきわめて新しい字句である。”

How has charcoal been classified in Japan? (Charcoal Taxonomy)
Charcoal type = tree species x production area x charcoal making method, so the number of charcoal types made in Japan can be said to be countless. In order to classify the large number of charcoal types in Japan, charcoal is first classified according to whether it is made in a charcoal kiln (continuous charcoal making) or not (one-shot charcoal making).
Next, we classified charcoal produced using a charcoal kiln according to "extinguishing location," defining black charcoal as charcoal extinguished inside the kiln and white charcoal as charcoal extinguished outside the kiln.
Therefore, the terms "white coal" and "black coal" are unique to Japan, and there is no other country other than Japan that defines and uses these terms differently.
At first glance, it is difficult to see the whole picture, but when illustrated, it becomes very simple and easy to understand and retain in one's memory.
